The migration route from Algeria to the Balearic Islands<\/strong> is currently the fastest-growing in the entire Mediterranean<\/strong>, according to the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior<\/strong>. So far this year, more than 6,000 people<\/strong> have arrived on the islands by sea, representing an 84% increase<\/strong> compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n

“The Balearic Islands are now the main gateway for irregular migration<\/strong> into Europe across the Mediterranean,” said the President of the regional government, Marga Prohens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In light of this situation<\/strong>, Prohens and the President of the Mallorca Island Council, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s<\/strong>, have called on the European Commission<\/strong> in Brussels to activate Frontex<\/strong> in order to curb the arrival of small migrant boats from Algeria. The meeting took place with European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner<\/strong>, and was also attended by the Presidents of the island councils of Menorca, Adolfo Vilafranca<\/strong>, and Ibiza, Vicent Mar\u00ed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A European problem<\/h2>\n

Both Commissioner Brunner and the island presidents agreed that the migration crisis in the Balearic Islands is “a European problem”<\/strong> that requires a joint response<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prohens recalled that the formal request to deploy Frontex<\/strong> must come from the Spanish Government<\/strong>, but criticised what she described as a lack of action by the central authorities.<\/p>\n

“It is the Spanish Government that must make the request<\/strong>, and to this day, it has not been done<\/strong>,” she insisted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The President of the Mallorca Island Council<\/strong>, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s<\/strong>, warned that Mallorca is facing an unprecedented migration crisis<\/strong> that has overwhelmed the island\u2019s child protection system.<\/p>\n

\n

“Despite allocating more than 30 million euros<\/strong> to address the situation, we no longer have available spaces or professionals. It is incomprehensible that the Government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez has not requested Frontex\u2019s intervention, and that is why we are asking the European Union for a common and determined response<\/strong> to this emergency,” said Galm\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Mallorcan leader also recalled that the island council has formally asked the Spanish Government twice<\/strong> to activate Frontex along the Balearic route, so far without any response.<\/p>\n

Willingness to deploy Frontex<\/h3>\n

For his part, Commissioner Brunner<\/strong> expressed his willingness to deploy Frontex<\/strong> but stressed that a formal request from Spain<\/strong> is essential. He also noted that this European mechanism significantly reduces irregular migration<\/strong> in the regions where it is implemented.<\/p>\n

Prohens thanked the Commissioner for “his understanding and concern” regarding the evolution of the migration route, and warned that the island administrations are managing the guardianship of unaccompanied minors on their own<\/strong>, without sufficient resources.<\/p>\n
