The Balearic Government<\/strong> has launched an ambitious reforestation project at the public estate of s\u2019Alqueria Vella<\/strong>, located within the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park (Art\u00e0)<\/strong>. The initiative includes the planting of 40,000 native trees and shrubs<\/strong> and involves an investment exceeding one million euros<\/strong>, of which the TUI Care Foundation<\/strong> contributes \u20ac550,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The work, carried out by the Balearic Institute of Nature (IBANAT)<\/strong>, aims to restore areas affected by forest fires<\/strong> and rebuild the park\u2019s plant cover<\/strong>. The selected area for this new reforestation is located near the Cam\u00ed dels Presoners<\/strong> and will feature species typical of Balearic flora, such as pi blanc<\/strong><\/em> (Aleppo pine), ullastre<\/strong><\/em> (wild olive), aladern de fulla estreta<\/strong><\/em> (Phillyrea angustifolia), llamp\u00fadol<\/strong><\/em> (Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris), mata<\/strong><\/em> (mastic tree) and garball\u00f3<\/strong><\/em> (Mediterranean fan palm).<\/p>\n

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet<\/strong>, highlighted that \u201cthis initiative is an example<\/strong> of how collaboration between the public and private sectors<\/strong> benefits our natural environment, as it helps to restore forests, conserve biodiversity, and strengthen the fight against climate change<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reforestation at s\u2019Alqueria Vella progresses in an area of high environmental complexity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

All the plants used in the reforestation of s\u2019Alqueria Vella come from the Menut Forest Nursery (CEFOR)<\/strong> in Escorca<\/strong>, and were grown from native seeds<\/strong> collected in nearby locations. Minister Simonet emphasised that \u201cthis practice helps to preserve the genetic diversity<\/strong> of the species and increases the capacity of the reforested area to adapt<\/strong> to the site\u2019s conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Reforestation<\/p>\n

The area under restoration presents high environmental complexity<\/strong>, as natural forest regeneration has not progressed due to the lack of a seed bank<\/strong>, the presence of feral goats<\/strong>, and the rocky nature of the terrain<\/strong>. To prepare the soil, a spider excavator from Asturias<\/strong> has been used \u2014 a machine capable of operating on steep slopes<\/strong> and in rocky areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The work has been carefully planned with the utmost care<\/strong> to protect biodiversity. No interventions have taken place in areas inhabited by Jasminum fruticans<\/strong><\/em>, the only known population in the Balearic Islands, and the ethnological elements<\/strong> and ancient farmland<\/strong> in the surroundings have been respected.<\/p>\n

The project also aims to improve water retention<\/strong>, reduce erosion<\/strong>, and enhance biodiversity<\/strong>. The new forests will help to protect the land<\/strong>, reduce the risk of flooding<\/strong>, and capture carbon dioxide<\/strong>, thereby contributing to slowing desertification and improving air quality.<\/p>\n

Promotion of volunteering and environmental education activities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In addition, the agreement with the TUI Care Foundation<\/strong> includes other actions such as the improvement of previous reforestations<\/strong> through the incorporation of more than 2,000 specimens<\/strong>, mainly holm oaks<\/strong>, as well as forest management work<\/strong>. It also provides for the restoration of coastal habitats in Son Real<\/strong> and the promotion of volunteering and environmental education activities<\/strong>, including the creation of educational materials<\/strong> and the installation of interpretative signage<\/strong> in the Natural Park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
