The releases took place on <strong data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"830\">1 and 3 October<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"859\">Cala Figuera (Calvi\u00e0)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"902\">Cabo Salines (Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi)<\/strong>. With this action, the project has now reached <strong data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1002\">1,517 seahorses reintroduced into the Balearic Sea<\/strong>, helping to <strong data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1056\">strengthen wild populations<\/strong> of this iconic species.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_149604\" style=\"width: 503px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149604\" class=\"wp-image-149604 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Caballito-de-mar-liberado.webp\" alt=\"Seahorses\" width=\"493\" height=\"561\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-149604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos: Palma Aquarium Foundation.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1162\">A project to restore Mediterranean seahorses<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1595\">Seahorses (<strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1208\">Hippocampus spp.<\/strong>) are <strong data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1253\">key indicators of marine ecosystem health<\/strong>, although they are very vulnerable. The <strong data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1336\">\u201cCavallets de mar balears\u201d<\/strong> project, launched in <strong data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1367\">March 2022<\/strong>, aims to <strong data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1447\">facilitate the breeding of these species in a controlled environment<\/strong> within the <strong data-start=\"1459\" data-end=\"1477\">Palma Aquarium<\/strong>. Afterward, the individuals are <strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1546\">reintroduced into their natural habitat<\/strong> to strengthen Mediterranean populations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1804\">The initiative seeks to <strong data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1661\">reinforce the two most common species<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1666\" data-end=\"1693\">Hippocampus hippocampus<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1699\" data-end=\"1725\">Hippocampus guttulatus<\/strong>, whose populations have declined by <strong data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1780\">25% to 30%<\/strong> over recent decades.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"1879\">Release in protected areas of Calvi\u00e0 and Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"2188\">On <strong data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1900\">1 October<\/strong>, the technical team from <strong data-start=\"1923\" data-end=\"1941\">Palma Aquarium<\/strong> moved <strong data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"2007\">66 common seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus)<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"2011\" data-end=\"2029\">Port Portals<\/strong>. Then, on <strong data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2052\">3 October<\/strong>, they transported <strong data-start=\"2065\" data-end=\"2107\">3 Hippocampus guttulatus individuals<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2137\">one breeding female<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2185\">Col\u00f2nia de Sant Jordi Port<\/strong>. From there, the animals were embarked on the <strong data-start=\"2235\" data-end=\"2290\">zero-emission electric sailboat Galaxie Stenella<\/strong>, operated by <strong data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2317\">TrueWorld<\/strong>. Upon reaching a size of <strong data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2591\">around 12 centimetres<\/strong>, they were deemed <strong data-start=\"2609\" data-end=\"2646\">ready to survive in the wild<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2925\">The release sites \u2014<strong data-start=\"2671\" data-end=\"2702\">Cala Figuera and Cabo Salines<\/strong>\u2014 are designated as <strong data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2767\">Sites of Community Importance (SCI)<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2771\" \/>These areas, designated by the <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2822\">European Union<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2824\" data-end=\"2874\">protect natural habitats and marine species<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"2924\">support Mediterranean biodiversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"3007\">Sustainable funding through Banca March\u2019s Mediterranean Fund<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3218\">The <strong data-start=\"3021\" data-end=\"3051\">\u201cCavallets de mar balears\u201d<\/strong> project is funded by the <strong data-start=\"3075\" data-end=\"3097\">Mediterranean Fund<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3147\">sustainable and socially responsible investment fund<\/strong> managed by <strong data-start=\"3163\" data-end=\"3177\">March A.M.<\/strong>, the asset manager of the <strong data-start=\"3194\" data-end=\"3215\">Banca March Group<\/strong>.\u00a0The fund <strong data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3273\">allocates 10% of its management fee<\/strong> to marine <strong data-start=\"3289\" data-end=\"3312\">conservation projects<\/strong>. It also invests in sectors linked to the <strong data-start=\"3361\" data-end=\"3378\">blue economy<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3384\" data-end=\"3415\">sustainable water management<\/strong>.
