Palma<\/strong> has taken a decisive step towards becoming European Capital of Culture 2031<\/strong>. The mayor, Jaime Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s<\/strong>, yesterday presented the city\u2019s candidacy<\/strong> at the European Parliament<\/strong> in Brussels<\/strong>, describing it as \u201can extraordinary, challenging and transformative challenge for our city.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event was attended by the President of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens<\/strong>, MEPs Rosa Estar\u00e1s<\/strong> and Antonio L\u00f3pez-Ist\u00fariz<\/strong>, as well as representatives of the European Commission and Palma City Council, including Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Culture Javier Bonet<\/strong>, and the General Coordinator for Culture and Tourism, Fernando G\u00f3mez de la Cuesta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mediterranean in motion<\/em>: an inclusive and transformative candidacy<\/h2>\n

Under the slogan Mediterranean in motion<\/strong><\/em>, Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s explained that the project has a clear purpose: \u201ca commitment to a culture where everyone<\/strong> can participate on equal terms<\/strong> and to universal accessibility in spaces, content and activities<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor stressed that culture in Palma \u201cis experiencing a major qualitative leap<\/strong> and is shaping up as an essential element for sustainable development<\/strong>, social cohesion<\/strong> and the international projection<\/strong> of the city.\u201d Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s added that the European Capital of Culture is conceived as \u201ca tool for inclusion, a space for dialogue, an economic driver and an instrument to improve quality of life for all people<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citizen participation and collective approach<\/h3>\n

Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s underlined that the candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2031 is \u201ca project that involves each and every citizen, not only of Palma, but also of all the towns and cities of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.\u201d He also pointed out that a participatory process<\/strong> has been launched, open to individuals, groups and organisations, enabling everyone to contribute ideas and cultural projects.<\/p>\n

Unlike other candidacies, the mayor noted that \u201cwe have not chosen to create a single artistic direction, but rather to establish two independent professional committees, one artistic and one scientific<\/strong>,\u201d tasked with developing the programme\u2019s content with full autonomy and aiming for a consensual project.<\/p>\n
