{"id":149174,"date":"2025-09-17T15:59:26","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T13:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/mallorquines-creen-que-hay-demasiados-turistas\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T10:17:39","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T08:17:39","slug":"mallorquines-creen-que-hay-demasiados-turistas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/en\/mallorquines-creen-que-hay-demasiados-turistas\/","title":{"rendered":"The 78.5% of Mallorcans believe that too many tourists arrive on the island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><strong> Three out of four residents of the Balearic Islands (75.6%)<\/strong> believe that <strong>too many tourists arrive on the islands<\/strong>, a sentiment that reaches its peak in <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"530\">Mallorca, <\/strong>where <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"530\">78.5% of inhabitants <\/strong>say the arrival of visitors is <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"530\">excessive<\/strong>, according to the <em data-start=\"541\" data-end=\"618\">2024 Residents\u2019 Opinion Survey on Tourism in the Balearic Islands<\/em>, carried out by the Ag\u00e8ncia d&#8217;Estrat\u00e8gia Tur\u00edstica de les Illes Balears (AETIB). By comparison, in <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"732\">Eivissa <\/strong><strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"732\">66.6% <\/strong>of respondents perceive tourist saturation; in <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"732\">Menorca<\/strong>, <strong>65.6%<\/strong>; and in <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"732\">Formentera<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"732\">53.5%<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111380\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111380\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111380\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/calo-des-moro-masificacion-mallorca-e1758116697709.webp\" alt=\"calo des moro overcrowding mallorca\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-111380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Es Cal\u00f3 des Moro is a clear example of tourist overcrowding in Mallorca.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another noteworthy finding of the study is that, although tourism remains the <strong>economic engine<\/strong> of the islands, <strong>71.1% of those with economic ties to the sector<\/strong> believe that too many tourists arrive, or that they arrive in excessive numbers at certain times of the year. This percentage rises to <strong>82%<\/strong> among those not economically linked to the sector, highlighting that concerns about saturation affect the <strong>majority of the population<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Study methodology<\/h2>\n<p>The main objective of the survey was to understand how Balearic residents assess possible measures, such as <strong>limiting the number of visitors<\/strong> or <strong>restricting holiday rentals<\/strong>, and the <strong>impact of tourism on their quality of life<\/strong>. In total, during the past month of <strong>October<\/strong>, <strong>2,008 people aged over 18<\/strong> were interviewed, all with permanent residence in the Balearic Islands for at least the past year: 738 in Mallorca, 460 in Menorca, 460 in Eivissa and 350 in Formentera. It is worth noting that the sample in Formentera is particularly significant, as it represents a high proportion of the island\u2019s population compared with the others, offering a very representative view of local perception.<\/p>\n<h3><strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1294\">Restricting holiday rentals and hire vehicles, the most supported measures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_149145\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149145\" class=\"wp-image-149145 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Aetib1.webp\" alt=\"Tourism survey\" width=\"780\" height=\"577\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-149145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Infographics: AETIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"857\">\n<p data-start=\"565\" data-end=\"857\"><strong data-start=\"565\" data-end=\"601\">Limiting the number of visitors:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"605\" data-end=\"643\">69.1% of Balearic residents<\/strong> agree with this initiative. Mallorca stands out with <strong>77.4%<\/strong>, as being the island that receives the most tourists, its residents experience saturation more intensely and consider visitor caps especially necessary to preserve quality of life and avoid demographic pressure. The island\u2019s year-round tourism also plays an important role.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"1226\">\n<p data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"1226\"><strong data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"896\">Limiting the number of cruise ships arriving in the islands:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"927\">69.2% of residents<\/strong> support this measure. By island, support is distributed as follows: Mallorca, the main receiver of cruises in the Balearics, leads with <strong data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1005\">77.4%<\/strong>, followed by Eivissa <strong data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1024\">44.8%<\/strong>, Menorca <strong data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1043\">37.6%<\/strong> and Formentera <strong data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1066\">19.1%<\/strong>. Reducing cruise arrivals would help avoid overcrowding and peaks of tourist pressure in short periods, mainly in Palma.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1634\">\n<p data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1634\"><strong data-start=\"1230\" data-end=\"1294\">Restricting holiday rentals in private homes:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1325\">80.5% of residents<\/strong> support this proposal, the most popular across the archipelago. By island: Mallorca <strong data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1378\">82.9%<\/strong>, Menorca <strong data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1397\">76.5%<\/strong>, Eivissa <strong data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1416\">70.6%<\/strong> and Formentera <strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1439\">62.6%<\/strong>. These figures clearly reflect that tourist gentrification and the shortage of housing for locals are among the main concerns for Balearic residents.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-149147 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Aetib2.webp\" alt=\"tourism survey\" width=\"780\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1933\">\n<p data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1933\"><strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1700\">Limiting the number of tourist establishments\/bedplaces:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1731\">68.4% of residents<\/strong> support this initiative. It is seen as a tool to balance the tourism offer with the capacity of services and the environment, reducing the impact on infrastructure and natural resources.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"2232\">\n<p data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"2232\"><strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1984\">Limiting the number of hire vehicles:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2015\">79.6% of residents<\/strong> agree with this measure, the second most supported after restrictions on holiday rentals. Reducing the number of rental cars would help decrease congestion on roads and in tourist areas, improving mobility and safety.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The impact of tourism on residents&#8217; quality of life<\/h3>\n<p>The study also captures the perception of various effects of tourism on the islands, showing broad consensus on some key aspects:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149167 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/turismo2.webp\" alt=\"tourism survey\" width=\"780\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"830\">\n<p data-start=\"524\" data-end=\"830\"><strong data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"324\">Increases the cost of housing:<\/strong> In the Balearic Islands, <strong data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"349\">77.2%<\/strong> of respondents consider that tourism has a <strong data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"419\">major impact<\/strong> on housing prices, while <strong data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"474\">17.1%<\/strong> rate it as a <strong data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"510\" data-is-only-node=\"\">medium impact<\/strong> and only <strong data-start=\"521\" data-end=\"529\">5.8%<\/strong> believe it is <strong data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"557\">low or negligible<\/strong>. By island, the percentages for major impact reach <strong data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"661\">78.8% in Menorca<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"635\">78.5% in Mallorca<\/strong>, with all territories above <strong>64%<\/strong>. These results reflect that <strong>access to housing<\/strong> has become one of the <strong>main concerns of Balearic society<\/strong>, with growing difficulties for many residents to access an affordable home.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"830\"><strong data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1040\">Increases the cost of goods and services (including transport):<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1053\">55.3%<\/strong> of respondents in the Balearics perceive a <strong data-start=\"1095\" data-end=\"1111\">major impact<\/strong> in this area, <strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1140\">30.3%<\/strong> rate it as <strong data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1175\" data-is-only-node=\"\">medium impact<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1190\">14.4%<\/strong> consider it <strong data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1218\">low or negligible<\/strong>. In Mallorca, the major impact rises to <strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1270\">57.2%<\/strong>. These findings suggest that tourism also affects the cost of everyday life, from basic products to mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149169 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/turismo3.webp\" alt=\"tourism survey\" width=\"780\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149171 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/turismo1.webp\" alt=\"tourism survey\" width=\"780\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1841\">\n<p data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1841\"><strong data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1450\">Degrades natural resources:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1463\">62.3%<\/strong> of residents in the Balearics consider that tourism has a <strong data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1543\">major impact<\/strong> on natural resources, <strong data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1583\">29.3%<\/strong> indicate a <strong data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1611\" data-is-only-node=\"\">medium impact<\/strong>, and only <strong data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1630\">8.4%<\/strong> see it as <strong data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1664\">low or nonexistent<\/strong>. In Mallorca, the percentage for major impact rises to <strong data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1730\">64.7%<\/strong>, highlighting social sensitivity to the environmental effects of tourism activity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"2292\">\n<p data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"2292\"><strong data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"1911\">Creates overcrowding in streets, shops and public transport:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1915\" data-end=\"1924\">65.5%<\/strong> of respondents in the Balearics believe tourism causes a <strong data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2002\">major impact<\/strong> on the saturation of public spaces, <strong data-start=\"2045\" data-end=\"2054\">28.6%<\/strong> perceive it as <strong data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2088\" data-is-only-node=\"\">medium impact<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2094\" data-end=\"2102\">5.9%<\/strong> rate it as <strong data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2133\">low or negligible<\/strong>.
