The Balearic coast cleaning service<\/strong>, coordinated by the public company PortsIB<\/strong>, removed a total of 6,707.35 kilos of waste<\/strong> from the archipelago’s coasts last August<\/strong>. This figure represents a daily average of 216.37 kilos<\/strong> and reflects the work of the 23 vessels<\/strong> distributed across the four islands.<\/p>\n

By type of vessel<\/strong>, the 15 beach boats<\/strong> collected 3,645.65 kilos<\/strong>, while the 8 offshore vessels<\/strong> removed 3,061.70 kilos<\/strong> during the month. The beach boats, adapted for shallow areas, and the offshore vessels, capable of travelling up to five miles from the coast, worked continuously throughout the 31 days of the month.<\/p>\n

Waste distribution by island<\/h2>\n

Mallorca<\/strong> accounted for the largest volume, with 3,069.35 kilos<\/strong>, followed by Eivissa<\/strong> (1,907.40 kilos), Menorca<\/strong> (1,262.25 kilos) and Formentera<\/strong> (468.35 kilos).<\/p>\n

Regarding the materials collected<\/strong>, plastic accounted for 47.10% of the total<\/strong>, followed by wood<\/strong> (36.08%) and vegetation<\/strong> (6.65%). Organic waste, oils and other miscellaneous materials<\/strong> were also removed. Special operations were also carried out to remove bulky items<\/strong>: in Mallorca, fibreglass pieces, boat batteries, a chair and a beach deckchair<\/strong> were removed; in Menorca, a wooden board, a log and various plastics<\/strong>; in Eivissa, several metal cans, a buoy with a chain and a piece of log<\/strong>; and in Formentera, a tyre, a plank, a chair and a baby stroller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, during August this service from the Conselleria de la Mar i del Cicle de l\u2019Aigua<\/strong> (Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle) attended seven alerts<\/strong>, five of them managed in collaboration with Salvament Mar\u00edtim<\/strong> (Maritime Rescue Service) and the 112 emergency service<\/strong>, and two at the request of institutions or individuals. The Balearic coast cleaning campaign will remain active until 30 September<\/strong>, maintaining surveillance and cleaning of the coasts to protect the marine environment and the safety of bathers.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
