Photo: Ajuntament de Palma.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"706\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The piece, measuring <strong>three metres in length and weighing around 150 kilos<\/strong>, has been installed in the park\u2019s <strong>lake<\/strong> and <strong>donated<\/strong> to the city by the artist himself. The sculpture is made from a <strong>special mortar resistant to seawater<\/strong>. Its hollow structure allows it to float steadily, <strong>anchored by stainless steel chains<\/strong> to keep it in place.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"706\">Thanks to Ricard Chiang<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"1118\">The mayor of Palma, <strong>Jaime Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s<\/strong>, <strong>expressed his gratitude<\/strong> for Chiang\u2019s generous contribution: \u201cThanks to this proposal, the figure of the <em data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"958\">Drac de na Coca<\/em> is brought back to become <strong>part of the city\u2019s image<\/strong>, incorporating this piece into Palma\u2019s sculptural heritage, as the city aims to become the <strong>European Capital of Culture in 2031<\/strong>.\u201d According to Mart\u00ednez Llabr\u00e9s, the sculpture combines \u201cculture, tradition and history, and recalls the 18th-century legend of the dragon that roamed the city\u2019s sewers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1336\">Also present at the sculpture\u2019s unveiling were the first deputy mayor and councillor for Culture, <strong>Javier Bonet<\/strong>; the general coordinator of Culture and Tourism, <strong>Fernando G\u00f3mez de la Cuesta<\/strong>; and the artist himself, Ricard Chiang.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1702\"><strong data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1702\">The legend of the <em>Drac de na Coca<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"2046\">The story of the <em data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1737\">Drac de na Coca<\/em> dates back to 1776, when rumours began to spread that a huge dragon was prowling around La Portella street, near Palma Cathedral. Local residents reported strange noises at night, and some even claimed the beast had devoured children and beggars.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2352\">The situation escalated to the point where a young knight, Bartomeu Coch, decided to confront the fearsome creature on his way to visit his fianc\u00e9e \u2014 hence the nickname \u201cna Coca\u201d. With great courage, he managed to slay the beast, which turned out to be a crocodile that had grown hidden in the city\u2019s sewers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2354\" data-end=\"2727\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Due to its rarity, Captain Coch\u2019s family had the creature embalmed and kept it for years, until they donated it to the Diocesan Museum of Palma, where it has been on display since the early 20th century.
