Photo: Piter Castillo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"123\" data-end=\"580\">Despite being \u201cprofoundly anti-nostalgic,\u201d Mallorcan journalist and writer Emili Manzano has published <em data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"246\">Me\u2019n record<\/em> (Anagrama), a book of \u201cisolated, seemingly disconnected memories.\u201d These are the memories \u201cof an ordinary person who doesn\u2019t intend to represent anyone,\u201d because the writer\u2019s challenge \u201cis basically to entertain the reader by telling stories,\u201d he explains from Mallorca, the island he returned to four years ago after spending 35 in the Catalan capital.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"1394\">His memories still vividly hold the sounds, smells, and places of his childhood. \u201cFortunately, the things I enjoyed to the point of shaping my sensitivity still retain their brightness and freshness despite the passing of years \u2014 especially the flavors, the smells, the physical sensations, the sounds, even the feeling of the June sun on my skin or the sea water, the rocking of a <em data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"976\">lla\u00fct<\/em> during fishing hours, summer nights under a grapevine, the ritual gestures of pig slaughtering&#8230; And the people, especially those I loved \u2014 they never want to leave me, and I\u2019m so thankful for that. They still talk to me and keep me company. The same thing happens with the places: I clearly remember how they were, and I can recognize them beneath the thick layers of asphalt and concrete now covering many of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"2699\"><strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1421\">A BIBLICAL CURSE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"2699\">Indeed, today\u2019s Mallorca is far removed from the one evoked in his new book. Today\u2019s Mallorca feels \u201cuncomfortable\u201d to Manzano. He is irritated by things like \u201cthe declining quality of life for most of us \u2014 and I\u2019m not just talking about the difficulty of finding parking, the crowds in central Palma, or the overcrowded beaches; I mean the challenges that everyday Mallorcans face in accessing housing, even just rental, and land ownership.\u201d As he criticizes, \u201cwe can\u2019t compete with wealthy outsiders who arrive and legally acquire a house, a small estate, a piece of land we\u2019ve dreamed of \u2014 and that\u2019s now forever out of our reach. It\u2019s not an easy situation to deal with. Psychologically, it\u2019s terrible: it makes us feel like we\u2019re worth less, like we\u2019re second or third class citizens. The feeling of dispossession, of exclusion, has already become a kind of social psychological illness, a syndrome waiting for a name. It\u2019s what I call the \u2018Mallorcan paradox\u2019 (or more accurately, a \u2018parajoda\u2019): we are natives of a paradise we can increasingly barely enjoy, a paradise that expels us. It has something of a biblical curse, doesn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2701\" data-end=\"3361\">Manzano is already working on his next book, which will focus on curious words and expressions from the Mallorcan popular dialect, \u201calong with others that exist only in my family or are personally meaningful to me.\u201d As he notes, he still uses terms like \u201ct\u00e8ntol,\u201d \u201cjutipiri,\u201d or \u201cb\u00e0mbol.\u201d Until this new book is published, readers can travel through his memories in the pages of <em data-start=\"3105\" data-end=\"3118\">Me\u2019n record<\/em>.
