The Government of the Balearic Islands<\/strong> has launched the largest floating solar plant in the Balearics<\/strong> on the Capdepera irrigation reservoir<\/strong>. The plant will avoid the emission of over 1,000 tonnes of CO\u2082 per year<\/strong> and will be able to supply energy to more than 650 homes<\/strong>. The project, promoted by the Balearic Institute of Energy (IBE), involved an investment of \u20ac1,449,500<\/strong> and covers a surface area of 9,120 square metres<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The facility features 2,528 solar panels<\/strong> and a peak power of 1,477.44 kWp<\/strong>. It includes four inverters of 350 kWn each<\/strong>, totalling 1,400 kWn<\/strong>. In addition to generating renewable energy, this floating solar plant helps to reduce water evaporation from the reservoir<\/strong> and improves the cooling of the panels<\/strong>, increasing their efficiency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Floating solar plant enables more efficient water use<\/h2>\n

This type of installation does not consume additional land<\/strong> and allows for a more efficient use of water<\/strong>. The natural cooling effect provided by the water surface boosts the performance of the solar panels.<\/p>\n

At present, three similar plants are under construction<\/strong> in the reservoirs of Santa Maria del Cam\u00ed, Consell, and Ariany<\/strong>. They will have a combined capacity of 2.1 MW<\/strong> and will generate electricity equivalent to the consumption of a municipality like Maria de la Salut<\/strong>. These installations have a budget of over three million euros<\/strong> and will help reduce CO\u2082 emissions by 1,700 tonnes per year<\/strong>, which is equivalent to planting 170,000 trees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The IBE is also planning new plants in Inca<\/strong> (1.4 MW), Art\u00e0<\/strong> (2.8 MW), Ciutadella<\/strong> (0.5 MW), and Santa Eul\u00e0lia des Riu<\/strong> (0.5 MW).
