A growing trend among residents who long for that \u201cisland of calm\u201d praised by Santiago Rusi\u00f1ol, and who now find their new paradise in regions such as Asturias and Galicia.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"889\">A Change for the Better<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"1313\">\u201cI sold a 50-square-meter apartment in La Soledad, a 4th floor with no elevator in an old building with neighborhood problems. With the money I got, I bought a two-story house in the countryside, with a garden, no neighbors, and views of the river and mountains,\u201d says Narciso Marcos, a 48-year-old Mallorcan, who started a new life in Mieres, Asturias, just two months ago. \u201cIt\u2019s a change for the better,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_120082\" style=\"width: 1546px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120082\" class=\"wp-image-120082 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/mallorquin-en-Asturias-e1749110866538.webp\" alt=\"Mallorcan in Asturias\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Narciso Marcos.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1315\" data-end=\"1859\">The reasons for packing up, as this graphic designer from Palma explains, range from personal to social. \u201cI consider myself privileged\u2014I had my own place\u2014but thinking about the future, I believe things will get very tough in Mallorca. When you walk around Palma and see how everything has become so expensive\u2026 I grew up there, and it used to be like this, you could live well, but now I doubt the situation will improve. The island is very touristy, overcrowded, and lacks industry. Everything will get more expensive and precarious, so I don\u2019t plan on going back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"2217\">Even though both his family and friends told him, \u201cHow can you leave alone?\u201d he insists: \u201cI\u2019m not worried about being alone, I\u2019m worried about work and making a living. This place is paradise. I hadn\u2019t gone to the beach for years\u2014except during the pandemic, because there was no one. Now I\u2019m starting to meet people and build a new circle. At a certain age, you prefer peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2240\">Another Mallorcan!<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2242\" data-end=\"2639\">Narciso\u2019s fresh start hasn\u2019t been without surprises. \u201cOnce I got here, people told me: Oh God, another Mallorcan coming to Asturias!\u201d he says. \u201cAlmost every real estate agency I\u2019ve dealt with told me they\u2019d shown a property to another islander just last week.\u201d This trend is also confirmed by the moving company that handled his relocation, <em data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2638\">Mudanzas Su\u00f1er<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"3141\">Jos\u00e9 Luis Silvente, a logistics worker at the company, highlights the growing number of moves from Mallorca to northern Spain. \u201cLast year we did more trips than in the previous three years combined. 70% go to Asturias and Cantabria, then comes Galicia.\u201d His company, one of the busiest in the archipelago, also operates in other areas like Guadalajara or Extremadura, but he emphasizes: \u201cThe demand in Asturias is incredible; it&#8217;s a shift that caught our attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3545\">They transport the \u2018life\u2019 of Mallorca residents in 45-meter trucks with 180 cubic meters of space, but \u201cfor every four we take there, we barely fill one for the return trip.\u201d Their clients share a common problem: housing costs. \u201cMost say they\u2019re leaving because rent here has become impossible, same with buying a home, and no one is fixing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3547\" data-end=\"3576\">The North Smells Like Es Trenc<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_120085\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120085\" class=\"size-full wp-image-120085\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/de-mallorca-a-Galicia-testimonios.webp\" alt=\"from Mallorca to Galicia testimonials\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marta Pi\u00f1a receives visits from friends and family in Galicia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"3578\" data-end=\"3927\">Marta Pi\u00f1a, another Mallorcan, has settled in Galicia. Although when her husband suggested looking for a second home in the north, her reaction was: \u201cNo way!\u201d Today, at 56, she admits: \u201cWe made a mistake. We sold the island. Mallorcans can\u2019t live in their own land, and we\u2019ve done a disservice to future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3929\" data-end=\"4185\">In her new chapter in Galicia, she has found \u201ca Mallorca from 40 years ago. There are also wonderful beaches here\u2014we\u2019ve found some that smell just like Es Trenc when I was little. I love the beach, and it\u2019s been a decade since I could go to the ones I like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4187\" data-end=\"4445\">But what\u2019s truly won her over is the northern people: \u201cThey\u2019re wonderful and very kind. When you ask how to get somewhere, they walk you there. You go into a bar and don\u2019t want to leave\u2014you walk out with potatoes, onions, lettuce\u2026 Like Mallorca used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4447\" data-end=\"4694\">They bought a \u201cvery large\u201d house with land in Monterroso for 50,000 euros and a beach apartment for 100,000. \u201cOf the 18 units in my complex, 5 were bought by Mallorcans. But prices are rising fast\u2014now they\u2019re going for 150,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4696\" data-end=\"4945\">Even her daughter, who at first didn\u2019t understand what they saw in the place, has changed her mind. Local agencies already note that many Mallorcans\u2014and also foreigners\u2014are buying property. \u201cThere\u2019s one Mallorcan who bought 31 homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4947\" data-end=\"4968\">\u201cDon\u2019t Let Them Come!\u201d<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4970\" data-end=\"5349\">Some northern real estate agencies are expressing concern: \u201cDon\u2019t let them come! We don\u2019t want this to become Mallorca. We know it\u2019s very hot there, but I\u2019m from Asturias and I\u2019m scared. I\u2019ve always taken my kids to a cove, and last year I couldn\u2019t even go swimming,\u201d says the manager of a local agency, who prefers to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5351\" data-end=\"5675\">Elvira Fafi\u00e1n, head of <em data-start=\"5395\" data-end=\"5415\">Aldeas Abandonadas<\/em>, a real estate agency specializing in rural properties, comments: \u201cMany people from Mallorca are arriving\u2014young people, couples, retirees, families with high social status. They\u2019re looking for small villages or clusters of buildings with land for tourism projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5677\" data-end=\"6075\">According to Fafi\u00e1n, \u201csmall houses with a main building and barn go for around 65,000 euros. Move-in-ready homes go for 120,000 to 150,000. But you need to be sure\u2014rural life can be hard. Some who came during the pandemic are now selling.\u201d Still, she emphasizes that Mallorcans tend to settle long-term, not just buy a second home.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"6077\" data-end=\"6106\">\u201cWe Were Doing Great, But\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_120079\" style=\"width: 1110px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120079\" class=\"wp-image-120079 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/de-mallorca-a-asturias-mudanza.webp\" alt=\"from Mallorca to Asturias move\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcos Fern\u00e1ndez and Sergio Siverio.<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"6108\" data-end=\"6388\">Marcos Fern\u00e1ndez (from Asturias) and Sergio Siverio (from Tenerife) also made the move. After 20 years in Mallorca, they relocated to Asturias. They were co-owners of hospitality businesses in Palma and now run a sports center in Tineo and a cocktail bar in Cangas del Narcea.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6390\" data-end=\"6675\">\u201cThe Palma we knew 20 years ago isn\u2019t the same. The cost of living in the Balearics wears you down\u2014it\u2019s unaffordable on an average salary. Here, wages are lower, but the cost of living is much lower too. We\u2019ve made more friends in 3 years here than in 20 in Mallorca. There, most people are just passing through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6677\" data-end=\"6957\">As for housing, they point out: \u201cHere you can rent for 300 euros\u2014in Mallorca, it would be 1,200\u2014and buy for 80,000\u2013100,000 euros\u2014there it would be 250,000\u2013300,000.\u201d They conclude: \u201cZero regrets. It hurts not to miss such a spectacular place as the Balearics, where I spent 20 years of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"6677\" data-end=\"6957\">THOSE BORN IN MALLORCA ALSO LEAVE<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6677\" data-end=\"6957\">Ibestat data on migratory movements between regions point to a growing exodus of islanders moving to the Cantabrian coast. Matias Reus Pons, PhD in Demography and lecturer in the area of Human Geography at the UIB, explains that &#8220;the upward trend of Mallorcans moving abroad is beginning to be noticed. What is new is that it is also affecting to people born in Mallorca, although in absolute terms the figures are still low&#8221;. Between 2021 and 2023, according to published data, those born in Mallorca who have emigrated to Asturias have increased by 82% and to Galicia by 24%. Will this trend continue? &#8220;For the moment it is a minority phenomenon in absolute terms,&#8221; he clarifies.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"6677\" data-end=\"6957\">THE PRICE OF HOUSING CONTINUES TO RISE<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6677\" data-end=\"6957\">Carlos Bardav\u00edo, partner in charge of Real Estate at KPMG Spain, refers to the report by La Caixa in which &#8220;it is clear that in the provinces where the temperature is lower, there is a greater increase in the price of rent&#8221;. &#8220;The real estate market is more dynamic than it seems&#8221;, describes the expert. In the case of emigrations from Mallorca to the north, Bardav\u00edo points to two factors: &#8220;One is obvious, the rise in prices in these provinces is much lower than in Mallorca and there is much more supply. The other is the job market, as these are provinces with a business and financial fabric that is not to be underestimated, with greater opportunities in non-tourist sectors&#8221;. The housing situation in Mallorca &#8220;is not very encouraging and no solution is foreseen. If interest rates fall, prices will rise. If all the projects announced by the Govern are developed, offering new land and new housing, in the medium term there could be an adjustment, because for prices to go down, supply has to increase&#8221;.
