A new lane on the Llucmajor motorway (Ma-19)<\/strong>, running from the So n’Oms exit to the Palma airport access<\/strong>, has now been opened. With a length of approximately two kilometres<\/strong>, this infrastructure is part of the Palma Access Plan<\/strong> and has involved an investment of around one million euros<\/strong>. The main objective of the new lane is to reduce daily traffic congestion<\/strong> that occurred in this area, especially during peak hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project visit was led by the president of the island council, Lloren\u00e7 Galm\u00e9s<\/strong>, who was accompanied by the councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio<\/strong>; the deputy mayor for Infrastructure of Palma, Bel\u00e9n Soto<\/strong>, and the island director of Infrastructure, Rafel Gelabert<\/strong>. Galm\u00e9s highlighted that this work is part of ongoing efforts to improve mobility<\/strong> on the island and to ease the traffic problems that were affecting drivers in the area.<\/p>\n

The stretch between the So n’Oms exit and the motorway towards the airport had long been one of the most congested points<\/strong> for traffic, handling around 100,000 vehicles daily<\/strong>. Every morning, thousands of vehicles from areas such as s’Arenal, Platja de Palma, s’Aranjassa and es Pil\u00b7lar\u00ed<\/strong> would converge at this access point, causing significant traffic jams<\/strong> that hindered traffic flow. The main issue was the lack of lane capacity<\/strong> to absorb the volume of vehicles during peak hours.<\/p>\n

The construction of the new lane involved a series of complex technical works. A third adjoining lane<\/strong> was added to the existing two lanes in the section between the So n’Oms industrial estate entry and the airport exit. To accommodate this new lane, it was necessary to widen the motorway platform<\/strong>, as the right shoulder did not have the required width throughout the route. Significant earthworks on the central reservation and right shoulder<\/strong> were also carried out to provide the necessary width for the new infrastructure.<\/p>\n
