As of <strong>January 2025<\/strong>, the Executive owes <strong>\u20ac810 million<\/strong> to airlines for the <strong>75% subsidies<\/strong> on tickets for <strong>residents of the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla<\/strong>, an amount that could soar to <strong>\u20ac1.5 billion<\/strong> if no measures are taken, according to the <strong>Airline Association<\/strong> (ALA) in a statement. This situation puts the continuity of many routes at risk, which could lead to a <strong>reduction in frequencies or even the cancellation of flights<\/strong>, directly affecting residents who would have <strong>fewer transport options<\/strong> and possibly <strong>higher ticket prices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118089 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Avion-atardecer.webp\" alt=\"Airplane\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Airlines, acting as <strong>intermediaries<\/strong> by applying the discount to ticket prices and subsequently <strong>claiming the amount from the State<\/strong>, warn that the lack of payment is jeopardising the <strong>viability of many routes<\/strong>. In the case of the Balearic Islands, connectivity with the mainland has <strong>grown significantly<\/strong> in recent years, with <strong>55 million seats<\/strong> offered in <strong>2024<\/strong>, representing a <strong>6% increase<\/strong> compared to <strong>2023<\/strong> and a <strong>12.85% rise<\/strong> from <strong>2019<\/strong>. However, this expansion could be <strong>compromised<\/strong> if the debt continues to rise, warns ALA.<\/p>\n<h3>Insufficient budgets<\/h3>\n<p>The issue lies in the fact that the <strong>General State Budgets<\/strong> (PGE) allocated for these subsidies have been <strong>insufficient<\/strong>. In 2023, <strong>\u20ac560.81 million<\/strong> was assigned, an amount that was <strong>rolled over into 2024 and 2025<\/strong>, despite the fact that the <strong>actual demand<\/strong> has far exceeded this figure. Even with an <strong>additional \u20ac170 million<\/strong> through the Contingency Fund, the funds have not been enough, leaving airlines in a state of <strong>financial distress<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the Airline Association (ALA), <strong>Javier G\u00e1ndara<\/strong>, has warned that if this issue is not resolved, airlines may be forced to reduce frequencies or cancel routes, severely affecting connectivity in Balears and other extra-peninsular territories such as the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla. Additionally, the lack of liquidity is also harming <strong>travel agencies<\/strong>, which depend on the payment of management fees for subsidised tickets.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e1ndara has <strong>urged the Government to pay the outstanding amounts<\/strong> as soon as possible and to rectify the situation in upcoming budgets with more realistic allocations to prevent further defaults.
