This represents <strong>14,827 more employed people<\/strong> compared to January of the previous year. The region remains among the <strong>top-ranked in Spain<\/strong>, only surpassed by <strong>the Canary Islands<\/strong>, which experienced a <strong>3.4%<\/strong> increase. Nationally, employment growth stood at <strong>2.4%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the positive year-on-year trend, <strong>affiliations have decreased<\/strong> compared to <strong>December<\/strong>, with a drop of <strong>7,129 people<\/strong> (<strong>-1.5%<\/strong>). Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Regarding <strong>unemployment<\/strong> in the Balearic Islands, it fell by <strong>5%<\/strong> in January compared to the previous year, with a total of <strong>29,560 unemployed people<\/strong>. On a month-on-month basis, the decline was <strong>2.1%<\/strong>, making the region the <strong>only one in Spain to reduce unemployment in January compared to December<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By island:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mallorca: -4.8%<\/li>\n<li>Ibiza: -6.6%<\/li>\n<li>Menorca: -6.5%<\/li>\n<li>Formentera: -1.7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nationally, year-on-year unemployment fell by 6.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The administrative unemployment rate stands at 5.8%, 0.5 percentage points lower than the previous year, consolidating the region\u2019s progress towards full employment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Boost for the self-employed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Self-employment<\/strong> continues to rise in the region, with <strong>98,754 people<\/strong> registered as self-employed in January, representing <strong>20.5% of total employment<\/strong>. Year-on-year, the number of self-employed workers has <strong>increased<\/strong> by <strong>2.6%<\/strong> (+2,546 people), while compared to December, it has <strong>decreased<\/strong> by <strong>0.9%<\/strong> (-933 people).<\/p>\n<p>Catalina Cabrer, Regional Secretary for Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue, <strong>positively<\/strong> assessed these figures, highlighting the growth of self-employment as a reflection of the <strong>government\u2019s commitment to entrepreneurship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hiring<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A total of <strong>21,405 new contracts<\/strong> were registered in January, <strong>278 fewer<\/strong> than the previous year (-1.3%).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year-on-year variation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men: -2.8%<\/li>\n<li>Women: +0.9%<\/li>\n<li>Under 25s: +4.4%<\/li>\n<li>Over 25s: -2.6%<\/li>\n<li>EU foreign nationals: -4.9%<\/li>\n<li>Non-EU foreign nationals: +6.6%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By sector:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Commerce: +4.3%<\/li>\n<li>Industry: -14.3%<\/li>\n<li>Agriculture: -13.7%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compared to December, hiring increased by 20% (+3,568 contracts), with rises across all islands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ibiza: +38.2%<\/li>\n<li>Formentera: +18.1%<\/li>\n<li>Mallorca: +17.8%<\/li>\n<li>Menorca: +11.0%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Permanent contracts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>65.4% of all contracts in the Balearic Islands, compared to the national average of 41.9%.<\/li>\n<li>Year-on-year decline of 3.4% in permanent contracts, while temporary contracts increased by 2.8%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Job seekers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In January, there were <strong>137,593 job seekers<\/strong> (+2.9% year-on-year).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year-on-year increase by island:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mallorca: +3.0%<\/li>\n<li>Menorca: +4.8%<\/li>\n<li>Formentera: +8.8%<\/li>\n<li>Ibiza: +1.0%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compared to December, the number of job seekers rose by 0.8% (+1,107 people).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Employment protection and quality<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The unemployment benefit coverage rate stood at 63.2%, 3.3 percentage points higher than in January 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Balearic Islands recorded a 3.2% increase in employment in <a href=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/en\/balears-y-canarias-lideraron-la-creacion-de-empleo-en-espana-durante-el-mes-de-enero\/\"> [&#8230;]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":116869,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1515,1513],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-116952","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy-and-tourism","category-society"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
