In 2023, <strong>59%<\/strong> of cancer deaths in the islands were in <strong>men<\/strong>, while the remaining <strong>41%<\/strong> were in <strong>women<\/strong>. This statistic highlights the magnitude of the healthcare challenge that cancer represents in the community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116931 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Deteccion-de-cancer.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of World Cancer Day held yesterday, the Ministry of Health of the Balearic Islands urged the population to follow <strong>healthy lifestyle habits<\/strong> and participate in <strong>early detection programmes<\/strong> to reduce the number of diagnoses and deaths, respectively. The most lethal cancers in <strong>women<\/strong> are <strong>lung, breast, and colon<\/strong> cancers, while the most common cancers in <strong>men<\/strong> are <strong>lung, colon, and prostate<\/strong>. Prevention, through <strong>avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption<\/strong>, as well as <strong>controlling obesity and sedentary behaviour<\/strong>, remains key in the fight against this disease, according to the Balearic government.<\/p>\n<h3>Smoking, the major enemy<\/h3>\n<p>According to the <strong>World Health Organization<\/strong> (WHO), around <strong>one third<\/strong> of cancer deaths are caused by avoidable factors such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet, and lack of exercise. <strong>Smoking<\/strong>, in particular, is the <strong>largest avoidable risk factor<\/strong>, responsible for <strong>90%<\/strong> of <strong>lung cancer<\/strong> cases and linked to seven other types of cancer: <strong>head, neck, bladder, kidney, pancreas, oesophagus, and colon<\/strong>. Quitting smoking can reduce the risk of cancer, and 10 years after quitting, the risk of dying from lung cancer is <strong>reduced by half<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the approach and treatment of these tumours accounts for <strong>15%<\/strong> of all cancer-related costs in this country. It is estimated that between <strong>25 and 65 years old<\/strong>, nearly <strong>30%<\/strong> of men and over <strong>25%<\/strong> of women smoke daily.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry also highlights the importance of <strong>early detection programmes<\/strong>, which enable the identification of cancer in its early stages, when treatments are more effective. The Balearic Islands is participating in a national pilot project for the early detection of lung cancer, as this type of tumour often evolves asymptomatically, causing <strong>80%<\/strong> of cases to be diagnosed at an advanced stage.<\/p>\n<h3>Screening for early cancer detection in the Balearic Islands<\/h3>\n<p>In addition, the Ministry coordinates screening programmes for detecting <strong>breast and colorectal cancer<\/strong>. In 2024, <strong>more than 38,500 women<\/strong> underwent a <strong>mammogram<\/strong>, and <strong>1,280<\/strong> of them were referred for <strong>further studies<\/strong> due to signs of <strong>malignancy<\/strong>. In the colorectal cancer screening, <strong>105,685 people<\/strong> were invited to take a faecal occult blood test, of which <strong>1,469<\/strong> were referred for a <strong>colonoscopy<\/strong> for a more detailed diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry is also implementing a programme for the early detection of <strong>cervical cancer<\/strong>, which will include vaginal cytology tests and the detection of the human papillomavirus (HPV), the main cause of this type of cancer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cancer is the leading cause of mortality in the Balearic <a href=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/en\/el-cancer-provoca-casi-un-tercio-de-los-fallecimientos-en-balears\/\"> [&#8230;]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":116932,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1518],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-116943","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
