This increase is made possible by the <strong>generous altruistic act<\/strong> of <strong>57 donors and their families<\/strong>, bringing the donor rate in the region to <strong>47 per million inhabitants<\/strong>, an increase of <strong>nine donors<\/strong> compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_116701\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116701\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116701\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/trasplantes-2024.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"404\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-116701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Minister of Health, Manuela Garc\u00eda; the President of the National Transplant Organisation, Beatriz Dom\u00ednguez; the Director General of the Health Service, Javier Ure\u00f1a; and the Regional Transplant Coordinator, Miguel Agudo, alongside members of the multidisciplinary team at Son Ll\u00e0tzer University Hospital. Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>By island, <strong>Majorca<\/strong> led the donations with <strong>48 donors<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Menorca<\/strong> with <strong>6<\/strong>, and <strong>Ibiza and Formentera<\/strong> with <strong>3<\/strong> donors. Of the 57 donors, <strong>21<\/strong> donated in <strong>asystole<\/strong>, more than a third, a technique that allows organ extraction in cases of <strong>cardiorespiratory arrest<\/strong>, while the remaining <strong>36<\/strong> were brain death donors.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that of the total donors, <strong>fifteen were foreign<\/strong> and <strong>one was a paediatric donor<\/strong>. As for the number of organs donated by these donors, <strong>112 were kidneys, 42 livers, 10 lungs, 8 hearts, and 4 pancreases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Health, Manuela Garc\u00eda, thanked the <strong>effort and dedication<\/strong> of the <strong>multidisciplinary teams<\/strong> carrying out these transplants and placing the Balearic Islands among the <strong>most advanced autonomous communities<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>solidarity<\/strong> of the donors and their families who have <strong>gifted many years of life<\/strong> to patients in need of their organs, according to sources from the Balearic Government.<\/p>\n<h3>Records in kidney and liver transplants<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding the <strong>transplants<\/strong>, Son Espases University Hospital performed a total of <strong>89 kidney transplants<\/strong>, the <strong>highest number<\/strong> ever recorded, and <strong>22 liver transplants<\/strong>, also setting a <strong>record<\/strong> since the start of the programme in 2021. Of the total transplants, <strong>90<\/strong> were performed on patients from <strong>Majorca<\/strong>, <strong>17 from Ibiza<\/strong>, and <strong>4 from Menorca<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the archipelago, <strong>24 patients<\/strong> received transplants in other autonomous communities, with notable transplants of heart, lung, liver, and kidney carried out in <strong>Catalonia, Madrid, and the Canary Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Tissue donation<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding <strong>tissue donation<\/strong>, last year saw <strong>121 cornea donors<\/strong> and <strong>30 donors of osteotendinous tissue<\/strong>.
