The first satellite<\/strong> of the Balearic Islands<\/strong> will be launched into space in the last quarter of 2025<\/strong>, marking a technological milestone<\/strong> in the archipelago\u2019s history. Manufactured and operated<\/strong> by the company Open Cosmos<\/strong>, led by Mallorcan Rafel Jord\u00e0<\/strong>, this satellite aims to provide technological solutions<\/strong> to the environmental<\/strong> and tourism management challenges<\/strong> the region faces.<\/p>\n

This ambitious project is partially funded by European funds<\/strong> managed by the Balearic Government<\/strong> and involves partnerships with Wireless DNA S.L.<\/strong>, the University of the Balearic Islands<\/strong> (UIB), and Garden Hotels<\/strong>, with the support of the Mallorca Hotel Business Federation<\/strong> (FEHM).<\/p>\n

Jord\u00e0, CEO and founder of Open Cosmos<\/strong>, had already stressed the importance of this step<\/strong> in an interview with Mallorca Global Mag<\/em><\/strong> in its winter 2023-2024 edition<\/strong>. In that interview, Jord\u00e0 noted that the Balearic Islands needed to “commit to launching satellites into space<\/strong>” to access data on “water resources, coastal monitoring, spill detection, deforestation, wildfire response, flood impact…” He also pointed out that “having this information is crucial for the technological competitiveness of the islands<\/strong>.” As a Mallorcan, he added, “I would love to bring data processing and analysis capabilities here.” You can read the full interview at this link<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A satellite for the environment and tourism<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The satellite will gather key data on the Balearic territory<\/strong> to monitor and mitigate<\/strong> the effects of climate change<\/strong>. According to Open Cosmos, the data will be used to improve natural resource management<\/strong>, plan more effective responses<\/strong> to emergencies, and enhance sustainability<\/strong> in strategic sectors like tourism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The images and analyses<\/strong> provided by the satellite will help tackle increasingly frequent phenomena<\/strong>, such as floods and wildfires<\/strong>, and will offer tools for efficient land and infrastructure management<\/strong>. Additionally, it aims to contribute to more sustainable tourism planning<\/strong>, helping to control overcrowding<\/strong> in various parts of the islands during the high season<\/strong>, a challenge discussed in this report on tourist saturation<\/strong><\/a> in the winter 2024-2025 edition<\/strong><\/a> of Mallorca Global Mag<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A commitment to sustainability and innovation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

During the satellite’s presentation at the new Open Cosmos offices<\/strong> in Palma, located in the Balearic Technological Innovation Park<\/strong> (ParcBit), Rafel Jord\u00e0 expressed his pride<\/strong> in leading the development of the Balearic Islands’ first satellite: “Measuring the effects of climate change and human activity on our islands is key to preserving the paradise we live in. This project places the Balearic Islands on the international space sector map<\/strong> and strengthens the commitment to sustainability and innovation<\/strong> that defines this community.”<\/p>\n

Antoni Costa<\/strong>, Vice-President of the Balearic Government, emphasised the project’s importance for the archipelago’s future<\/strong>, stating that “this satellite is much more than a technological advancement; it strengthens our position as leaders in the transition<\/strong> to a more sustainable tourism model<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, UIB Rector Jaume Carot<\/strong> highlighted that “research and technological development are essential to tackling climate change. This project will transform how we manage resources and plan the region\u2019s future<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n
