The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens<\/strong>, delivered her New Year’s Eve speech<\/strong> from Dalt Vila in Ibiza<\/strong>, marking the 25th anniversary of its declaration as a World Heritage Site<\/strong>. Prohens reaffirmed her commitment to stability and change<\/strong>, emphasising that in 2025 the Government will continue to prioritise the interests of the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During her speech, broadcast on IB3, Prohens reflected on the challenges overcome in 2024<\/strong> and highlighted the progress made in key areas such as housing, the economy, healthcare, and regional financing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Challenges and progress in 2024<\/h3>\n

On the subject of housing<\/strong>, the President highlighted the foundations laid for a new direction<\/strong>, defending private property<\/strong> and providing incentives<\/strong> for small landlords<\/strong> to expand the supply of affordable housing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prohens underscored the significance of the Sustainability Pact<\/strong> as a consensual initiative to transform the islands\u2019 economic model<\/strong> and the Health Pact<\/strong>, stating that \u201csome issues transcend political parties and legislative terms.\u201d In healthcare<\/strong>, she also highlighted the free access to adapted leisure activities for children with disabilities<\/strong>, the reactivation of the healthcare professional career pathway<\/strong>, a right curtailed since 2018, and pioneering measures in Spain such as a monthly allowance<\/strong> for ALS patients<\/strong> and cancer treatment<\/strong> at Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Migratory crisis<\/h3>\n

The President used her address to urge the Spanish Government<\/strong> to provide a robust response<\/strong> to the migratory crisis<\/strong> and \u201cnot to turn a blind eye.\u201d \u201cWe can no longer offer dignified accommodation, nor can we allow more lives to be lost at sea,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

She also reiterated the need for fair financing<\/strong> that acknowledges the uniqueness of the Balearic Islands<\/strong> and enables key investments in mobility, roads, and public transport<\/strong>. \u201cI won\u2019t tire of saying it: we don\u2019t want to be more than anyone, but we will not allow ourselves to be less<\/strong>, nor less than any other region,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n

Solidarity and recognition<\/h3>\n

Prohens expressed her solidarity with the Valencian Community<\/strong> following the October floods and thanked the Balearic emergency services<\/strong> for their efforts in the affected areas. She also paid tribute to Rosario D\u00edaz<\/strong>, a victim of gender-based violence<\/strong>, reaffirming her commitment to combatting this societal scourge: \u201cHer tragic loss drives us to continue fighting<\/strong> this phenomenon with all the resources available.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the sporting arena<\/strong>, she celebrated the achievements of Balearic athletes<\/strong> and their historic participation in the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Vision for 2025<\/h3>\n
