This figure marks one of the <strong>lowest incidences<\/strong> in the historical series since <strong>1990<\/strong>. The <strong>MMR vaccine<\/strong>, which protects against <strong>mumps, measles and rubella<\/strong>, remains <strong>crucial<\/strong> for prevention.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112661\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112661\" class=\"size-full wp-image-112661\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/vacunacion-paperas.webp\" alt=\"Mumps vaccination\" width=\"780\" height=\"528\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-112661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although it is administered <strong>free of charge<\/strong> in <strong>two doses<\/strong> \u2014at <strong>12 months<\/strong> and at <strong>three years<\/strong> of age\u2014 at least <strong>10<\/strong> of the infections recorded in 2023 could have been prevented with correct <strong>vaccination<\/strong>. Of the 26 diagnosed cases, <strong>16 people<\/strong> were fully vaccinated, one had an <strong>incomplete vaccination<\/strong> and two had not received <strong>any dose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Cases of mumps in the Balearic Islands by island<\/h3>\n<p>Of the recorded cases, <strong>17<\/strong> occurred in <strong>Majorca<\/strong>, <strong>6<\/strong> in the <strong>Pitiusas<\/strong>, and <strong>3<\/strong> in <strong>Menorca<\/strong>, affecting individuals between <strong>14 months and 84 years<\/strong>, with <strong>14<\/strong> of them <strong>under 15 years old<\/strong>. Two patients required hospitalisation, and 18 diagnoses were confirmed by laboratory tests.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, <strong>28%<\/strong> of the <strong>1,183<\/strong> cases recorded in the Balearic Islands (331 infections) are considered preventable. Mumps, caused by the Paramyxovirus, is highly contagious and spreads through saliva droplets. It causes inflammation in the salivary glands and, in severe cases, complications such as <strong>meningitis, encephalitis, deafness, or arthritis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its <strong>danger<\/strong>, the vaccine against mumps has been part of the vaccination schedule since 1981, and the disease has been a notifiable condition since 1982. Although it is more common in children and adolescents, sensitive adults can also become infected.
