To prevent future floods of such magnitude, the <strong>Consell de Mallorca<\/strong> has presented a drainage improvement project on the <strong>Sant Lloren\u00e7 bypass<\/strong>, passing through the <strong>Ses Planes stream<\/strong>, a key piece of infrastructure in the area.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"Projecte de millora del drenatge de la variant de Sant Lloren\u00e7 al seu pas pel torrent de ses Planes\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MnIuaSZe9og?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>A project to prevent future catastrophes<\/h3>\n<p>The work, which will be approved in the coming months, has a budget of <strong>5 million euros<\/strong> and aims to <strong>increase the hydraulic capacity<\/strong> of the current drainage system in the Ses Planes stream, whose inadequacy was a key factor in the 2018 floods. The <strong>Department of Territory, Mobility, and Infrastructure<\/strong> of the Consell has conducted the necessary technical studies, allowing the process of <strong>public consultation<\/strong>, <strong>tendering<\/strong>, and <strong>land expropriations<\/strong> to begin.<\/p>\n<h3>Increasing drainage capacity<\/h3>\n<p>With this intervention, the water flow capacity under the road will increase from the current <strong>105 cubic metres per second<\/strong> to <strong>488.5 cubic metres per second<\/strong>. This will be achieved by expanding the <strong>water flow frames<\/strong> from <strong>4 to 10<\/strong>, each measuring <strong>5.7 metres wide and 4.4 metres high<\/strong>, allowing for a much greater volume of water to be managed in the event of heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the roundabout on the bypass, which acted as a dam in the 2018 floods, diverting water into the urban centre, will be modified.<\/p>\n<h3>Project advances and resolution<\/h3>\n<p>This project, which had been stalled due to technical disagreements between the Consell de Mallorca and <strong>Water Resources<\/strong>, was unblocked a year ago. Since then, all the required studies, including topographical and structural reviews, have been completed to ensure the new drainage works are effective and safe.<\/p>\n<h3>Next steps<\/h3>\n<p>Once approved by the Consell\u2019s plenary session, the land expropriations and tendering for the works will proceed, with construction expected to begin in the coming months.
