The local business owners attribute this drop to the <strong>negative effects of water scarcity<\/strong> due to <strong>climate change<\/strong>. Additionally, the association warns that, aside from this reduction in production, up to <strong>20% of the harvest<\/strong> may <strong>remain uncollected<\/strong> due to <strong>labour shortages<\/strong> and the <strong>high temperatures<\/strong> recorded in Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-109092 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carob-2023-11-27-05-25-22-utc.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carob-2023-11-27-05-25-22-utc-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/carob-2023-11-27-05-25-22-utc.webp 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Juana Verger Mart\u00edn<\/strong>, President of the Associaci\u00f3 de Trossejadors de Garrova de Mallorca, an organisation representing around <strong>70%<\/strong> of sector producers, confirms that this year&#8217;s harvest will be lower than last year&#8217;s. &#8220;The <strong>drought<\/strong> causes the <strong>fruit to be drier<\/strong>, with <strong>less pulp<\/strong>, and consequently, we will not produce as many kilos,&#8221; she says. The yield expected this year is lower than in 2023, but it will <strong>not be a bad vintage<\/strong>. &#8220;Last year, we harvested 30% more than in 2022. It was a year of abundant kilos, but this year the carob weighs less,&#8221; adds Verger. The president also notes that there are areas on the island with more abundant production, while others have seen productivity reductions of up to 30%.<\/p>\n<h2>Between 15,000 and 18,000 tonnes of carob<\/h2>\n<p>Aside from the reasons for the decrease in production for the 2024 season, the Associaci\u00f3 de Trossejadors de Garrova reports that the <strong>total figures<\/strong> are expected to range between <strong>15,000 and 18,000 tonnes<\/strong>, with <strong>3,000 to 4,000<\/strong> tonnes being purchased by <strong>companies from the mainland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the price, this year the <strong>price of whole carob<\/strong> is between <strong>45 and 55 cents<\/strong>, a <strong>slight increase<\/strong> compared to last year, when it fell <strong>below two euros<\/strong>, ranging from <strong>30 to 40 cents<\/strong>, depending on whether it was <strong>organic or conventional<\/strong> cultivation.<\/p>\n<h2>Balears has 12,178 hectares of carob trees<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>area of carob trees<\/strong> in the Balearic Islands totals <strong>12,178 hectares<\/strong> and represents <strong>33% of the national area<\/strong> dedicated to this legume. Another notable fact from the association is that of the <strong>33,679 hectares of organic farming<\/strong> in Mallorca, carob occupies an area of <strong>1,600 hectares<\/strong>. Spain currently produces between <strong>80,000 and 100,000<\/strong> tonnes, with organic production making up between <strong>10% and 15% of the total<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>six companies<\/strong> currently in the association, <strong>Productos Fontanet, Lloren\u00e7 Arrom, Can Rob\u00ed, Jaime Adrover, Balesa, and Productos Mart\u00edn<\/strong>, manage approximately <strong>70% to 80%<\/strong> of the carob collection market in Mallorca.
