Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the Balearic Islands, 9,005.75 kilos of waste were collected, equivalent to a <strong>daily average of 296.48 kilos<\/strong>. This work was carried out by <strong>22 beach and coastal boats<\/strong>, hired by the Directorate General of Ports and Maritime Transport, including <strong>a new diesel-electric hybrid boat<\/strong> to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact.<\/p>\n<h2>Monthly Data<\/h2>\n<p>During <strong>May<\/strong>, more than <strong>3,447 kilos<\/strong> of waste were collected throughout the archipelago. <strong>Mallorca<\/strong> was the island with the highest amount of waste collected, with <strong>1,678 kilos<\/strong>. <strong>Menorca<\/strong> followed with just over <strong>1,072 kilos<\/strong>, while <strong>Eivissa and Formentera<\/strong> collected <strong>478 and 218 kilos<\/strong>, respectively. <strong>Wood<\/strong> was the most common waste, accounting for <strong>66.85%<\/strong> of the total, followed by <strong>plastic<\/strong> with <strong>26.94%<\/strong>, and other types of waste like <strong>tires and beach material<\/strong>, making up <strong>5.86%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108031\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108031\" class=\"wp-image-108031\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2024_7_12_3046100.webp\" alt=\"marine debris wood\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wood is the main type of waste removed from the waters of the Balearic archipelago. Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In <strong>June<\/strong>, the amount of waste collected increased significantly, exceeding <strong>5,558 kilos<\/strong> across the archipelago. <strong>Menorca<\/strong> led with <strong>2,311 kilos<\/strong>, closely followed by <strong>Mallorca<\/strong> with over <strong>2,000 kilos<\/strong>. <strong>Eivissa<\/strong> collected over <strong>1,036 kilos<\/strong> and <strong>Formentera<\/strong> just over <strong>209 kilos<\/strong>. This month, <strong>wood<\/strong> remained the most collected material, representing <strong>54.43%<\/strong> of the total, while plastic accounted for <strong>38.77%<\/strong> and other waste <strong>3.18%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>beach boats<\/strong>, designed to operate in shallow waters and collect small floating debris, collected over <strong>2,030 kilos of waste in June<\/strong>. Of these, Mallorca contributed 531 kilos, Eivissa 699 kilos, and Menorca almost 800 kilos. Formentera had no beach boat waste collection in June.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>coastal boats<\/strong>, which operate both in shallow waters and in areas up to 5 miles offshore, collected over <strong>3,500 kilos of waste in June<\/strong>. Mallorca was responsible for 1,469 kilos of this collection, Menorca for 1,512 kilos, Eivissa for 337 kilos, and Formentera for almost 210 kilos.<\/p>\n<h2>Special Collections<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_108029\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108029\" class=\"wp-image-108029\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2024_7_12_3046060.webp\" alt=\"marine pollution foams\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-108029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dispersion of foams and oils prompted various special actions along the Balearic coast. Photo: CAIB.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to regular collection, special collections were carried out to address exceptional situations. In Mallorca, remains of a boat, a log, and sea foam dispersion in May were removed, and foam dispersion and various sticks in June. In Menorca, two large logs were removed in May and several logs in June. In Eivissa, pieces of a boat were collected in May, and a drifting boat and oil dispersion in June.
