In an exciting development for the marine biodiversity in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>, the first public release of seahorses was celebrated, thanks to the “Cavallets de mar balears” project. Coordinated by the Palma Aquarium Foundation<\/strong> in collaboration with Banca March<\/strong>, this event took place on June 25, 2024, in the Sa Dragonera natural reserve.<\/p>\n

Commitment to Marine Conservation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The event, which was attended by prominent environmental and governmental leaders, marks a significant milestone in marine conservation efforts in the region. Pilar G\u00f3mez i Calatayud<\/strong>, Director and Conservator of the Sa Dragonera Natural Park, along with representatives from the Consell de Mallorca<\/strong> and the Govern de les Illes Balears<\/strong>, joined the technical team from Palma Aquarium and Banca March to release a breeding pair of Hippocampus Guttulatus<\/em> and four male juveniles of Hippocampus Hippocampus<\/em>, carefully raised at Palma Aquarium.<\/p>\n

The sustainable transport of these fragile marine inhabitants from Palma Aquarium to the Sa Dragonera reserve<\/strong> was carried out using the innovative zero-emission electric catamaran Blue Circle, operated by TrueWorld. Additionally, the diving center Firusub provided invaluable support with a specialized boat to ensure the success of the release.<\/p>\n

Importance of Seahorses in the Marine Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Seahorses are not only iconic in the marine world but also act as crucial indicators of the health of marine ecosystems<\/strong>. However, their vulnerability<\/a><\/strong> has put them at risk, with populations in the Mediterranean declining by 25% to 30% in recent decades. The “Cavallets de mar balears” project, which began in 2022 and was renewed in 2024, aims to protect and restore these species through breeding in controlled environments and their reintroduction into their natural habitat.<\/p>\n

Results and Sustainable Commitment<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since the beginning of the project, a total of 585 seahorses<\/strong> have been reintroduced into the Balearic Sea, including the 579 juveniles released in previous actions. “The ‘Cavallets de mar balears’ project underscores the positive impact of public-private collaboration in protecting our marine biodiversity,” highlighted a spokesperson for the Palma Aquarium Foundation. This initiative not only seeks to revitalize seahorse populations but also to educate and raise public awareness about the importance of conserving our oceans and their inhabitants.<\/p>\n
