By <strong>islands<\/strong>, there were <strong>16<\/strong> organ donors in <strong>Mallorca<\/strong>, <strong>4 in Menorca<\/strong>, and <strong>3 donors in Ibiza and Formentera<\/strong>, as reported by the Ministry of Health on the occasion of <strong>World Organ and Tissue Donor Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-106190 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mallorcaglobalmag.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/surgery-team-operating-in-a-surgical-room-2023-11-27-05-24-31-utc-2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of the <strong>23 organ donors<\/strong> in the Balearic Islands, <strong>6 were in asystole<\/strong>, a technique that allows organ donation in cardiopulmonary arrest implemented in 2016 in the public hospitals of the islands, and <strong>16 in brain death<\/strong>. At Son Espases, <strong>38 kidneys and 10 livers<\/strong> were transplanted. Additionally, <strong>3 multi-tissue donations<\/strong> were received (2 at Can Misses and 1 at Son Espases) corresponding to bone, tendon, and corneas, and there were <strong>23 exclusive cornea donors<\/strong> at the University Hospital Son Ll\u00e0tzer.<\/p>\n<h2>The rate of <strong>41.17 donors per million inhabitants<\/strong> in 2023<\/h2>\n<p>In regards to <strong>2023<\/strong>, the public hospitals of the islands transplanted <strong>132 organs<\/strong> from <strong>49 donors<\/strong>, reaching a rate of <strong>41.17 donors per million inhabitants<\/strong>. By islands, there were 43 organ donors in Mallorca, 3 in Eivissa and Formentera, and 3 in Menorca.<\/p>\n<p>In the summary of last year&#8217;s activity, the Autonomous Coordination of Transplants of the Balearic Islands (CATIB) reports that <strong>19 out of 49 donors<\/strong> (approximately <strong>39%<\/strong>) donated in asystole, while the remaining <strong>30 donors<\/strong> were in brain death (approximately <strong>61%<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>At Son Espases, <strong>68 kidney transplants<\/strong> were performed, including 5 from living donors, the highest number recorded since the program began. Additionally, <strong>16 liver transplants<\/strong> were carried out, the highest number of liver transplants since the program started in 2021.
