This Sunday 13th April, at 8:00 PM, the Parish Church of Santa Maria de Sineu will become the stage for one of the most innovative cultural experiences of Holy Week in Mallorca. The Consell de Mallorca presents, for the second consecutive year, the renewed staging of the Via Crucis in Mallorca under the name Apassionant. With the group Pinyol Vermell at the helm, the performance combines theatre, photography, and music to offer a unique interpretation of the Passion of Christ.

After the outstanding success of the first edition held last year at La Misericòrdia, the Consell has decided to repeat this event, which has already become a cultural reference, merging tradition and modernity in a proposal that attracts both devotees and culture enthusiasts. Admission is completely free, allowing all audiences to enjoy this unique performance.

A contemporary representation of the Via Crucis in Mallorca

Apassionant is not just any Via Crucis. Lasting 50 minutes, the performance offers an updated view of the events that marked the Passion of Christ: from the triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the resurrection of Jesus. The main characters, such as Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Judas, will be portrayed by eight actors who, in addition to their acting, will wear 18th-century attire, adding a historical touch to this artistic proposal.

What sets Apassionant apart from traditional representations is the integration of various artistic languages. Music, photography, and theatre intertwine masterfully to create a unique atmosphere that not only invites reflection but also highlights the importance of aesthetics in religious tradition. Every photograph, every verse, and every gesture of the actors are carefully designed to convey deep emotions and symbolic meanings that go beyond mere narrative.

The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained, “After the excellent reception last year, this year we want to continue offering a renewed and updated vision of the Via Crucis. Apassionant, by Pinyol Vermell, is a reinterpretation of the Way of the Cross that moves away from the traditional ones commonly seen during these holidays in various places in Mallorca. In this new format, photography and music play a prominent role, offering a new perspective on the Via Crucis, in which every image and every verse carries a deep meaning that invites the audience to reflect.”
