The Consell de Mallorca will eliminate a total of 18,000 tourist places on the island, a reduction of 4.2%. Specifically, the number of tourist places will be reduced from the current 430,000 to a total of 412,000, of which 308,000 belong to the hotel sector and the remaining 104,000 to holiday rentals.
In this regard, the president of the island’s institution, Llorenç Galmés, stressed that it will be “the first time in history that the decision has been taken to reduce the maximum ceiling for tourist accommodation. After eight years of a left-wing pact with a disproportionate growth in the number of vacancies, we have to opt for containment”.
For Galmés, one of the main challenges “to be managed in Mallorca are the tourist flows”, which is why he has advocated adopting “courageous measures” to avoid “putting at risk the coexistence between residents and tourists”.
The Consell de Mallorca will also undertake a modification of the Plan de Intervención de Ámbitos Turísticos (PIAT) so that the island can maintain its competitiveness while maintaining the key to the productivity of its offer. In addition, the Consell de Mallorca will continue to protect and guarantee the legal security of all the legal supply in the tourism sector, which means at the same time fighting against illegal supply, whatever type it may be and whatever sector it operates in, according to the Consell de Mallorca.
