The president of the Govern de les Illes Balears, Marga Prohens, has presented the ambitious project for a new railway line between Palma and Llucmajor, with a budget of 690 million euros. This investment aims to transform mobility on the island and promote the use of public transport. The project is progressing with its feasibility study, which will be approved in the coming days. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and last approximately four years, with an estimated completion by 2032.

The Palma-Llucmajor train line will increase railway users by 76%

This new railway project aims to improve connectivity in Mallorca, with an estimated 7.5 million passengers annually, representing a 76% increase in train and metro usage on the island. Currently, the train and metro network transports around 9.9 million passengers.

Quick connection between Palma, Llucmajor, and the airport in under 30 minutes

The train will connect Palma to Llucmajor in just 22 minutes, and to Son Sant Joan Airport in 11 minutes. It will also offer fast journeys to strategic points such as the Son Llàtzer University Hospital, S’Arenal, and the future Palma fairgrounds. The project also includes plans for park-and-ride facilities and new connections with EMT and TIB bus lines.

A budget of 690 million euros for works and new trains

The project has a total budget of 690 million euros, covering construction, the purchase of new trains, and the building of workshops. The most significant budget allocations are expected from 2026 onwards, with the tendering of works scheduled for 2027. This train will be 100% sustainable and accessible for people with disabilities, promoting the efficient use of various modes of transport thanks to new connections with bus lines and park-and-ride facilities.
