About 80% of Mallorca’s taxis will begin operating under a special pick-up scheme that will allow for a joint taxi service across eight municipalities in the Bay of Palma and the Serra de Tramuntana. The agreement, promoted by the Balearic Government, comes into effect on Wednesday 30 August in Palma, Calvià, Esporles, and Valldemossa, and will soon extend to Llucmajor, Deià, Puigpunyent, and Bunyola, once the agreements are ratified by their respective local councils.

The measure aims to improve mobility, increase the availability of taxis, and reduce empty return trips, allowing taxis licensed in any of the participating municipalities to pick up passengers in the others, provided certain conditions at taxi ranks are met:

  • A taxi from another municipality may only pick up passengers at a rank if there are no local taxis available,
  • or if there are more passengers waiting than taxis at the rank.

This new scheme aims to optimise the service, especially in tourist areas and during peak seasons.

The service will operate 24 hours a day until 30 September 2025, and is set to return in 2026 from 1 June to 30 September. A single fare will apply across the island, including €1.20 per kilometre, €2.50 base fare, and a €4.65 supplement for airport or port journeys.

In this first phase, more than 1,450 licences are already participating, with Palma (1,238) and Calvià (214) being the largest contributors. Once all eight municipalities are included, the scheme will cover over 1,530 taxis in Mallorca, representing 77% of the total on the island.
