The Ajuntament de Palma and the Govern de les Illes Balears have agreed to extend until 31 May the transition period from the Tarjeta Ciudadana (Municipal Citizen Card) to the new Tarjeta Única (Single Transport Card), with the aim of making it easier for people to adapt to Mallorca’s integrated public transport system.

Tarjeta Única public transport Mallorca

During this additional period, users will still be able to use the Tarjeta Ciudadana on EMT Palma buses. Once it ends, it will no longer be valid as a transport pass, so it will be necessary to have either the Tarjeta Única or the Tarjeta Intermodal in order to travel.

The new Tarjeta Única allows travel across Mallorca’s entire public transport network using a single card, including train, metro, TIB intercity buses and Palma’s urban buses.

At present, around 80% of Tarjeta Ciudadana users have already completed the migration to the new system. So far, around 118,000 Tarjeta Única cards have been issued, more than 89,000 of them first-time issues.

How to apply for the Tarjeta Única

Users who do not yet have the Tarjeta Única must apply for it free of charge by appointment at the designated service points or through the online channels.

Service points include EMT Palma offices, the Citizen Attention Office (OAC) in Cort, PalmaActiva offices, the Intermodal Station — which has increased its capacity —, TIB offices in Alcúdia, Inca and Manacor, and the town halls of Calvià, Llucmajor and Marratxí.

People over the age of 65 can complete the process without an appointment.

Balance and other services

Once the transition period ends, the balance stored on the Tarjeta Ciudadana will be transferred automatically to the Tarjeta Única or Tarjeta Intermodal in most cases. An additional step will only be required in specific situations, such as changes to the cardholder’s details.

The Tarjeta Ciudadana will remain valid for other municipal services, such as the issuance of the residence certificate for travel.

Free public transport in 2026

Holders of the Tarjeta Única or Tarjeta Intermodal will continue to travel free of charge throughout 2026. In addition, bank card payment is now available across the entire transport network, with discounts of 40% for the first passenger and up to 60% for accompanying passengers.
