The 2024 summer sales period in the Balearic Islands is here. It begins today, July 1, although major retailers already started the sales on June 28, and it will last for two months. The Balearic Government points out that “this is a great opportunity to buy what you need at a more advantageous price, but always keeping in mind that it is the price of the product that is reduced, not its quality or safety nor, of course, your rights as a consumer.”
The Directorate General for Benefits, Pharmacy and Consumer Affairs offers a series of recommendations for consumers to be better informed during this period of significant increase in offers at especially attractive prices:
- Calculate in advance what you want to spend and make a list. Compare prices and qualities. The original price should be displayed alongside the discounted price or the percentage of the discount. The original price is understood to be the lowest price that product has had in the store during the thirty days preceding the start date of the sales. Discounted products must be distinguished from the rest.
- It is important to know that regulations indicate that products must have been part of the store’s usual offer for at least one month, and their quality cannot differ from what it was before they were discounted. Units of a product acquired expressly for the sales cannot be used for discounts.
- Some stores establish special conditions for sales purchases (regarding returns, acceptance of card payments, etc.) which must be clearly indicated and in a visible place.
- Request and keep invoices or receipts as you will need them for any claim, exchange, or return.
- If you have any problem with the purchase and cannot reach a solution with the store, you can request the complaint form and file your complaint.
- Try to choose stores affiliated with the Consumer Arbitration System. In case of disagreement, consumer arbitrators will resolve disputes quickly and free of charge.
- Remember that the store is not obliged to exchange a product that is in perfect condition. Most businesses accept it, but it does not have to be for money; it can also be for another product or a purchase voucher. For online purchases, you have 14 calendar days to return the product.
- Keep the product’s advertisement along with the characteristics, instructions, and commercial catalogs. Remember that advertising is binding and its compliance can be demanded.
- Remember that after-sales service and the warranty period are the same during the sales or outside this period: 3 years for new products and 2 for digital products. If the product is second-hand, the professional seller can reduce its warranty to 1 year if a written warranty document is provided to the consumer. Otherwise, the warranty for used goods is 2 years.
