Hiking in Mallorca adds a new option with the opening of the East Mallorca Route GR 226, an itinerary of 100.48 kilometres that crosses some of the most emblematic landscapes of the Llevant. The new route strengthens the active tourism offer and underlines the Consell de Mallorca’s commitment to a sustainable model, focused on nature and the responsible use of the territory.

GR 226 links the municipalities of Artà, Capdepera, Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Son Servera. The route passes through coves, coastal stretches, rural tracks and areas of high landscape value. It offers an attractive alternative for both residents and visitors who seek nature-based experiences.

A route accessible to everyone

The East Mallorca Route GR 226 has a low difficulty level. This feature makes it accessible to hikers of different abilities. The main itinerary is divided into four stages, totalling 89.62 kilometres:

  • Stage 1: Calas de Mallorca – Manacor (25 km)
  • Stage 2: Manacor – Son Carrió (23 km)
  • Stage 3: Son Carrió – Artà (23.2 km)
  • Stage 4: Artà – Cala Mesquida (22.6 km)

The route also includes two additional access links:

  • Son Macià: 3.3 km
  • Costa de los Pinos: 7.7 km

This layout allows the experience to suit the time available or physical condition.

Strengthening the island’s GR trail network

GR 226 joins the network of long-distance routes alongside the Ruta de Pedra en Sec GR 221, which currently links Port d’Andratx with Port de Pollença, and the Artà–Lluc Route GR 222. The full implementation of these projects will create an approximate network of 585 kilometres of signposted long-distance trails.

Opening of the new hiking route in Mallorca

The second vice-president of the Consell and Minister for Environment, Rural Affairs and Sport, Pedro Bestard, said that “today is a great day, as we can confirm a further extension of Mallorca’s GR network and the Consell’s commitment to preserving paths, nature and heritage, as well as promoting responsible, high-quality tourism”. He added: “The Consell de Mallorca includes these new GR routes in the sports activities we run for families and older people, with a very positive response, as they allow people to get to know Mallorca through physical activity.”

Bestard took part in the inauguration event, which included a 6 km walk to Hotel La Taconera with around a hundred older participants from the Mou-te! groups.

The event also included the island directors for Sport, Toni Prats; Environment, Lluís Rubí; and Tourism, Pere Mas; the president of the Balearic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing, Xisco Fanals; and mayors and councillors from the five municipalities: Manuel Galán (Artà), Núria Garcia (Capdepera), Miguel Oliver (Manacor), Jaume Servera (Son Servera) and Joan Mestre, Tourism councillor for Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
