The Balearic Islands are positioned as one of the regions most committed to glass recycling in Spain. In 2024, the autonomous community collected a total of 52,400 tonnes of glass packaging, well above the national average. In individual terms, each Balearic citizen deposited an average of 113 bottles in the green bins, which is equivalent to 33.1 kg per person, compared to the national average of 65 bottles and 19.1 kg.

The commitment of the citizens of the Balearic Islands to glass recycling is reflected in impressive figures: in 2024, more than 491,000 glass bottles were deposited in a single day, which is equivalent to more than 651 bottles per minute.

Formentera leads glass recycling in the islands

By island, Formentera emerged as the largest contributor to glass collection, with 52.97 kg per inhabitant, followed by Ibiza (47.4 kg), Menorca (27.3 kg) and Mallorca (26.3 kg).

These figures, provided by Ecovidrio, reflect the success of the management of the only SCRAP specialised in the collection and sustainability of glass packaging in Spain. They also confirm that the Balearic Islands are continuing to exceed the targets set by the European Union for glass recycling, with an estimated recovery rate of 71.1% for 2024, far above the minimum requirements for 2025.

A joint effort between citizens and administrations

The Minister of Business, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, has positively assessed these results, “because they highlight the citizens’ awareness of recycling and environmental care, and because they show that good work is being done and we are on the right path”.

Meanwhile, Roberto Fuentes, regional manager of Ecovidrio, emphasised the importance of collaboration between the organisation and public administrations, which allows for continued improvement in results year after year. “However, if we want to place the Balearic Islands where they deserve to be in terms of circularity, it is essential for municipalities to implement local regulations that mandate recycling and separating waste at source, as the law requires. Only in this way will we achieve the goals ahead of us,” he noted.
