The Consell de Mallorca will invest 5,520,195 euros in projects and grants for the prevention of wildfires in the Serra de Tramuntana and the conservation of its natural and cultural heritage. This plan combines institution-led actions with subsidies for private individuals and town councils.

A key part of the project is financed with 1.8 million euros from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). The Consell will act in areas with the highest forest density and greatest fire risk. The interventions will include clearing the undergrowth, removing fallen or pest-affected trees, creating protective strips along strategic roads, and reducing vegetation density through preventive forestry management.

Work is scheduled to start this winter. In addition, continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure sustainability and a positive impact on the environment and local community.

Grants for the prevention of wildfires in the Serra de Tramuntana

The Consell has launched the 2025 ordinary grants call, with 2.8 million euros to fund forest clearance and regeneration. Applications can be submitted until 8 September.

In 2024, 920,195 euros were allocated to forest clearance in the Serra, more than half of the total grant funds. The remainder supported heritage conservation and agricultural and maritime activities.

Increase in forested area

Toni Solivellas, insular director of the Serra de Tramuntana, emphasises that recent wildfires in other regions highlight the importance of prevention: “In recent years, the Serra de Tramuntana has seen a significant increase in forested area, so clearing and managing the forest are essential measures to reduce the risk of wildfires and to protect both the natural and cultural heritage of this unique landscape,” declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
