The Portals Nous beach bar, located on s’Oratori beach, will open in 2023, managed by the parish of Portals. This is the first time this has happened, making it the first beach bar with a charitable purpose. The total funds raised at the Portals Nous beach bar will go towards the construction of a future shelter for needy families in Calvià. This initiative has been promoted by Pep Toni Guardiola, delegate of Cáritas Mallorca and rector of the parish of Portals.
Portals beach bar is Tabgha
Tabgha is the name of the chiringuito (beach bar) on the beach of Portals Nous for charitable purposes. A name that alludes to the town in Israel where, according to the Bible, Jesus Christ multiplied the loaves and fishes. According to Marta López, the head of Cáritas Interparroquial, the aim of the project is to “share and share” through the “solidarity economy”. And also respecting “social, ethical and ecological” criteria.
A concept that is well illustrated by a mural on the way down to the beach bar and which attracts the attention of visitors.
Beach bar opening hours
The manager of the Portals Nous -Tabgha- beach bar, Pedro Suau, has reported that it will be open until the end of September, from 9:00 to 21:00, reducing two hours at night to avoid disturbing the neighbours. He also detailed that it will be the employees themselves, eight at the moment, who will explain to customers the charitable purpose of the establishment, in addition to posters, information included in the menu cards and social networks.
The menu, which can be consulted on the Portals Nous beach bar’s website, includes breakfast until 12:00. It also offers snacks and salads, as well as the sweet touch of tiramisu.
Faced with the problem of the lack of housing in Calvià, there are plans to build a hostel for families in the parish premises next to the church of San Lorenzo in Palmanova. The intention is to double its building capacity with an upper floor to house the rooms. The ground floor will house the communal areas. According to the architect of the project, Lourdes Bosch, “the building will be able to accommodate between 12 and 24 people, although we are still working on the definition of the spaces”. “We want to create a space for coexistence, a community and family atmosphere in which the users feel safe, supported and with the necessary strength to move forward in their life project”, explained Aina Flexas, social technician of Cáritas Mallorca.
