“Non finito. The art of the unfinished” brings together 85 works from more than 40 museums at CaixaForum Palma

CaixaForum Palma presents the exhibition “Non finito. The art of the unfinished”, by the National Museum of Sculpture, a centennial reference that disseminates the most significant collection of Spanish sculpture. The exhibition explores works of art from all eras that, for different reasons, have remained unfinished, have been interrupted or have been intentionally conceived as fragments.

The exhibition, which includes 85 works from more than 40 museums and collections, underlines the constant predilection of artists throughout history for fragmentary forms. Six categories of unfinished art are proposed: the charm of beginnings, abbreviations in search of expressive richness, the imagination of disaster, metamorphosis, erosion and the aspiration of the infinite. The exhibition, which opens at CaixaForum Palma, will later travel to the National Sculpture Museum of Valladolid and CaixaForum Zaragoza.

El Greco, Chillida, Sorolla, Berruguete…

The tour brings together pieces by Joseph Beuys, David Hockney, Antonio López, El Greco, Dora Maar, Max Ernst, Rembrandt van Rijn, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall, Federico Fellini, Eduardo Chillida, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Brassaï, Eugenio Lucas, Joaquín Sorolla, Ignasi Aballí, Alonso Berruguete, Joan Miró, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Francisco Salzillo, Andreas Gursky, Buster Keaton, Georges Perec and William Kentridge, among others.

As an example of this unfinished art, the exhibition highlights the presence of Sorolla’s last painting. It is a portrait of Mabel Rick, wife of the Asturian writer Ramón Pérez de Ayala, which the artist never finished. While he was painting it one morning in July in her garden, the artist suffered a seizure that prevented him from painting again.

“Non finite. The art of the unfinished” can be visited until August 15, 2021 at CaixaForum Palma (Plaza de Weyler, 3). The cultural center has an educator service throughout the week that provides for the presence of an educator in a room available to the public, free with admission, for any questions or comments about the exhibitions. The service is provided from Monday to Friday, from 11:00 to 13:00; Wednesday and Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
