Mallorca will celebrate the “Nit de la Recerca” on the occasion of the Investigation Night that takes place in Europe on Friday 24 September. Among the organizations that will bring science closer to citizens through different activities are the University of the Balearic Islands, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Bit Foundation or the Archaeological Museum of Eivissa and Formentera.
This initiative is a European scientific dissemination project promoted by the European Commission and has been held since 2005 in more than 250 European cities simultaneously. Most of the activities will take place on Friday 24, when citizens will be able to attend conversations, quick appointments with researchers, workshops, exhibitions and open days. Events designed even to enjoy with the family and for which prior registration is required.
Fight against the climate crisis
The UIB has organized events with different research institutes such as short talks on board the trains of the Majorcan Railway Services (SFM). The objective pursued is to sensitize citizens about the importance of scientific research to curb climate change. The talks will take place on Friday 24.
On the same day, two workshops will be held on physics and chemistry and on climate change, organized by the Orientation and Transition Program at the UIB. In addition to an insect identification workshop, from the research group in Applied Zoology and Conservation. They will be held in the Plaza de España with the installation of tents. In addition, the Palma Intermodal Station will host the exhibition We Investigate to Advance, which can be visited throughout the week. The exhibition shows projects focused on the great challenges facing our society such as the climate crisis, the energy transition or sustainable food.
Researchers from the Interdisciplinary Ecology research group and the Biodibal project have organized a biodiversity Safari in Inca for the same Friday. It is a citizen science experience to learn about the biodiversity that lives in the Collado de las Monjas park. One of the most important green spaces in Inca.
Science by land, sea and air
Can Oleo, in Palma, will host activities organized by the CSIC. Between 18:30 and 20:00 on Friday, the popular game Who is who? themed with the Balearic species. This activity seeks to have a better vision of our biodiversity and to promote the conservation of the environment.
The “Nit de la Recerca” 2021 also includes the collage Recicla Ciencia, an activity where the little ones will be able to learn about some interesting instruments and machines that are used in the search centers of the CSIC Representation in the Balearic Islands. Through drawings, the boys and girls will be able to make a collage with the help of their families with different recycled elements.
From 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. it will be the turn of speed dating with CSIC scientists. Attendees will rotate from table to table to ask the researchers directly for questions and curiosities about their work. For its part, the Balearic Coastal Observation and Prediction System (SOCIB) will offer, between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., guided tours of its oceanographic vessel and will exhibit the photographic exhibition We investigate the sea, we share the future. It will be at the Muelle Viejo de Palma, in front of the Llotja.
To end the activities, the Bit Foundation has scheduled the conference “The search for the Solar System” given by Pep Marcus, disseminator and president of the Newton Club. It will take place at 8:00 p.m. in the Son Espanyol Cloister. Later, there will be an astronomical observation session with powerful telescopes to observe the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and deep sky objects such as nebulae and galaxies.
Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera will also have activities within the “Nit de la Recerca” 2021. You can check the full program on the event website.
