The Museu Marítim de Mallorca (Maritime Museum of Mallorca) reopens to the public this Friday, 3 October, after nearly two years closed due to safety issues at its Ses Voltes (Palma) headquarters. The reopening will be marked with a major community celebration starting at 6:00 pm, featuring a concert by Pere Andreo, a traditional ballada with Antic Cofre and a giant fideuá prepared by the Federació Balear de Confraries de Pescadors.

The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, stressed that the island institution has resolved all the building’s safety deficiencies: “there was no evacuation plan, the fire detection system did not work, the hoses were not connected and water did not reach the pipes in the area.” “For more than three years the museum was not a safe place, but now, thanks to the efforts of recent months, we have resolved a situation that put thousands of visitors at risk every year. Now we are reopening Ses Voltes with full guarantees“, she added.
An innovative museographic project
For the first time, the Museu Marítim de Mallorca has its own museographic project. The permanent exhibition is spread across five rooms and an educational space, designed around three main themes:
- Preservation of maritime heritage, both underwater and terrestrial.
- Marine biodiversity.
- Reflection and debate on contemporary relations with the sea.
The collection includes unpublished archaeological pieces from underwater sites, naval models and objects linked to traditional maritime trades. All of this is complemented by audiovisual and interactive resources that provide an immersive experience for all audiences.
In addition, IB3 has contributed more than 200 minutes of audiovisual material related to traditional Mallorcan cuisine, with recipes from programmes such as Això és mel, Cuina amb Santi Taura and Gent de la mar. This content reinforces the link between the sea and local gastronomy.
Accessibility and inclusion at the new Museu Marítim de Mallorca
The new museographic project also focuses on accessibility:
- Texts in easy-to-read format, validated by the CLARA Cognitive Accessibility Office.
- Panels in Braille and QR codes with audio descriptions and sign language.
- Systems compatible with cochlear implants for guided tours.
- Adapted access and signage in a building declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
A benchmark for maritime culture on the island
The reopening of the Museu Marítim de Mallorca marks a milestone in preserving the island’s maritime heritage. “We want the museum to be a meeting place for Mallorcans and a reference space for visitors who wish to learn about Mallorca’s historic and living relationship with the sea,” concluded Antònia Roca.
