From June 23 to September 15 it will be accessible by public transportation, on foot or by bicycle, from 10:00 am to 10:30 pm.
This Thursday, June 23rd, the measures to regulate traffic to access Formentor begin. The councilor of Mobility and Infrastructures, Iván Sevillano, together with the different administrations involved, presented the measures on June 7. This year, the restrictions could not start on June 15, as usual, due to the works that the Port Authority carried out in the last stretch of the access road to Formentor. These works consisted of the restitution of the wall that collapsed a few months ago.
During the period of the restrictions, access to Ma-2210 will be restricted from 10.00 am to 10.30 pm. As a novelty with respect to last year, the hours of limitation have been extended from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Two levels of restriction are established, where only authorized vehicles, public transport, emergency services and bicycles will be allowed to circulate. The first level starts at Port de Pollença and extends to Formentor beach. The second, from Formentor beach to the lighthouse. The Consell de Mallorca has set up a specific web site with all the information: https://formentor.conselldemallorca.cat/es/
Councilor Sevillano explained that “the implementation of these measures is carried out for road safety reasons, as well as for the territorial and environmental protection of such a sensitive site. We want to protect Formentor from excesses and overcrowding. We want people to be able to enjoy such a wonderful space as Formentor, but it will have to be done in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way, such as public transport or bicycles”.
This year we implemented two improvements: on the one hand, we will have a variable messaging panel (PMV) before reaching the traffic circle that starts the road, to inform drivers of the available parking spaces, for people who can justify there is access by parking ticket. Once the parking spaces are full, will be warned on the panel and can only be accessed by public transport, as there will be no parking space.
“In addition, we have increased the hours of restriction until 22.30 h to avoid crowds and incivism problems that arose last year to go to see the sunset massively. You can still enjoy this experience, but it must be done by public transport, as I said: both for safety and environmental protection” added the councilor Iván Sevillano.
DGT measures
Vehicles that meet the requirements to be able to circulate in the restricted zone must apply for accreditation at least three working days in advance. Information can be requested at: formentor@dgt.es.
Section 1. Formentor beach (from PK 2 to PK 8,7)
Regarding the accreditation in this first section, it can be requested three working days in advance before accessing or after, within three working days after accessing, justifying the legally established parking by means of the parking ticket. Therefore, and for more information on the justifications of tickets admitted in the section between kilometer 2 and 8.7, it is necessary to send an email to ticketsformentor@dgt.es indicating in the subject “Formentor beach”.
Residents can obtain the authorizations, those of visitors and those of the services to be provided on their property. With the novelty that this year the residents already accredited in previous years will have an application of the DGT in which they will be able to request authorizations directly and obtain them in real time from the email that they have previously accredited for this purpose. They will be informed from the e-mail: formentor@dgt.es.
Section 2. Formentor lighthouse (from KP 8.7 to KP 19.6)
In the second section, which goes from the beach to the lighthouse of Formentor, authorization will always be obtained in advance and those who request it will receive the information by email: formentor@dgt.es. In this way, they will be told what they must do to obtain the authorization. This year, if they are already accredited residents, they will be able to request authorizations directly and in real time through the above mentioned application. They will be informed when they contact by email: formentor@dgt.es.
Formentor lighthouse and Formentor beach
The safest way to access while the traffic reduction measures are maintained is by shuttle bus. Also, the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard will control the area to ensure that vehicles circulating in the area comply with the regulations and are parked in the permitted areas.
Improved mobility
The Department of Mobility and Infrastructures of the Consell de Mallorca has also worked to reinforce this measure through signage (indication of access prohibition, information signs, danger signs, priority identification…). In addition, there will be informers at the points of the restriction to solve the doubts of drivers who want to access the lighthouse and remind them of the mail where they can request more information: formentor@dgt.es. It has also begun a campaign of dissemination and information of the restrictions and how to access the lighthouse, to the media and on the website of the Consell. You can consult all the information in the web enabled by the Consell Insular de Mallorca: https://formentor.conselldemallorca.cat/es/
Inter-administrative collaboration
The Formentor peninsula is a site of special protection, declared World Heritage of Humanity. For this reason, the different administrations involved in its management, the Consell de Mallorca, the Govern de las Illes Balears, the Dirección General de Tráfico, the Guardia Civil, the Port Authority and the Town Council of Pollença, have joined forces to improve mobility in this emblematic space.
If you are going to ban access to a popular road in the height of summer then you need to put clear signs up in multiple languages saying that fines are applicable. There were literally 100’s of cars going that way when I went and although I saw a sign saying something about the road being closed ahead I followed everybody else. It was only when I hit the traffic jam near the beach that I turned round. If you don’t want people to follow that route put a barrier up otherwise it just looks like another way of conning tourists out of money!
A trap for the tourists, no signs at all on the road and literally 100s of cars being fined every day for going there, not knowing from where along the road you are not allowed to access. Nowhere near the actual lighthouse but still being fined even when turning around at the point from which most busses go from.
What an absolute joke. Has any one actually paid this? I’m definitely not
We’ve had a fine just come through…. Has anyone paid? We can’t remember seeing any signs at all! And we didn’t even get as far as the beach car park before turning round and driving back. Really don’t know what to do about it as wondering what the repercussions will be if we don’t pay. The photo is also pitch black with just a registration plate visible….
Oh. Really. No sign and no information anywhere. So this fine is actually illegal?
I just received fine for that. I was trying to understand how it is possible that I cannot drive on the main road until I read this article. I don’t remember any signs or lights. I was visiting a view point along with huge number of other cars and also other cars are also driving on this road. I agree, it’s trap for tourists. It was my first time in Spain, I’m really suprised of that.
THIS IS SO MUCH SCAM, the marking that the road is closed should be much better! we just got a fine for this, ridiculous.
Oh my! I hadn’t realised I wasn’t the only one! We turned round where the buses were and we’ve been fined. No idea what part of a restricted road I drove on.
i just got the 80 euro fine today as well. Did my best to translate as much as possible in Google, i thought it was a speeding fine, then i translated the location and found this website from Google. It really must be an amazing money generator. We were stuck in a long queue between the hill top view point (going up the mountain) and the main car park. We decided to turn around and drive back because the queue wasnt moving at all.
I did not see any signs anywhere (how would you go about paying anyway?) although that doesnt mean there weren’t any but it really feels like the authorities have created this with the intention of catching as many drivers as possible.
Has anyone paid? i’d be loathed to pay if no one else is, equally if i have to pay then id prefer the 50% discount which is applied in the first 20 days…. got scammed by the car hire company (RecordGO) and scammed by the local government. what a scam !
YESTERDAY I POSTED MY THOUGHT IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. FINISH FOR NO ACCESS TAKEN WITHOUT KNOWING HOW AND WHERE!
I BELIEVE IT IS VERY INCORRECT TOWARDS THOSE WHO COME TO VISIT YOUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND. PROHIBITION SIGNS MUST BE VISIBLE AND CLEAR! COMPLIMENTS
I got fined as well. Complete scam with no warning apparent. It’s not as if we haven’t contributed to the local economy as tourists lying IVA and eco taxes as well.
This is purely to make money from tourists. Thanks Mallorca..
Got mine in the post this week. What an absolute joke. The sign at the roundabout was in Spanish, we had no idea what it was trying to tell us, plus it flashed up different messages. Hundreds of cars were going up so we thought it was ok. No barriers or clear warning signs to tourists.
Has anyone paid this? If you haven’t have there been any repercussions yet? Do I pay?
Thanks
I just got my fine too. Won’t be returning to Mallorca as this has left a complete foul taste. Plenty more countries to visit. There were no signs and we turned around because of the queues so didn’t even get to the end. A total tourist trap with limited choice but to pay.
I got mine today as well, did not see the sign at all,and the picture of the rented car they sent was pitch black showing only the registration number of car.very disappointed ,as we has a great time in Mallorca but this gives a bitter after taste…
It is without a doubt a money grab from tourists,as the rental also took money for giving our information out.what a joke.
