The Consell de Mallorca has launched a new subsidy line aimed at restoring windmills in the Pla de Sant Jordi. The goal is to recover and preserve one of the island’s most iconic heritages. In an area spanning 55 kilometers, this region is home to over 1,000 water-extraction windmills, many of which are in an advanced state of deterioration.

Antònia Roca, Vice President of the Consell and Minister of Culture and Heritage, presented this initiative during the Son Ferriol fair, emphasizing that the Consell’s support will be more comprehensive this time compared to previous calls. “Owners will only need to provide permits, licenses, and materials, while the Consell will handle the drafting of the technical project and labor,” explained Roca.

Until 2027

The program, which will run until 2027, aims to restore the windmills that are an integral part of the landscape in the Pla de Sant Jordi. Due to their proximity to Palma’s airport, they form one of the first sights visitors see when arriving in Mallorca.

This project will have a budget of three million euros from the Sustainable Tourism Tax, distributed over two years. The subsidy application is open until October 15, 2024, with an informative meeting scheduled for September 26 in s’Aranjassa, where interested parties can clarify doubts and learn more about the details of the call.

With this initiative, the Consell de Mallorca aims not only to preserve the island’s cultural and architectural heritage but also to promote responsible tourism that reinvests in the protection of the elements that make Mallorca a unique destination.
