After a Thursday morning marked by torrential rain, the Balearic Islands are preparing for a new episode of instability. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts that a new storm system will arrive on Saturday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal phenomena that will affect the entire archipelago.

According to AEMET, the fast-moving front that crossed the islands on Thursday morning has already passed, leaving behind accumulations of between 20 and 30 litres per square metre in just half an hour. Wind gusts of up to 110 km/h were also recorded at the Dique del Oeste in Palma.

Orange alert in the Serra de Tramuntana

The AEMET has issued an orange alert for rain and wind on Saturday in the Serra de Tramuntana, where the storm is expected to have its greatest impact.
Across the rest of Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, yellow alerts are in place for rain, wind, and coastal phenomena. In Formentera, no significant warnings have been issued for now.

The Directorate General for Emergencies has urged residents to exercise extreme caution during this new weather episode. The situation is being closely monitored, and the Technical Advisory Committee of the METEOBAL Plan will meet again on Friday to update forecasts and coordinate preventive measures.

Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, securing objects on balconies and terraces, and staying informed through official channels.

Thursday’s incidents

The 112 Emergency Coordination Centre handled 70 incidents between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., none of them serious. Most occurred in Mallorca (35 in Palma, 19 in Calvià, and 5 in Llucmajor). The most frequent issues were fallen trees, detached urban elements, and water accumulation on public roads. Among the most notable cases were the temporary closure of the EI-800 road in Ibiza and the partial collapse of the roof of a healthcare centre in Palma.
