The incidence of influenza in the Balearic Islands has recorded a slight increase and now stands at 75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data corresponding to week 50 of the year (8 to 14 December). Despite the rise compared to the previous week (65 cases), the archipelago remains in a low-intensity epidemic phase, within Scenario I of the national infectious disease control protocol.

This scenario, defined by the Ministry of Health together with the autonomous communities, includes preventive recommendations such as the use of face masks by people with respiratory symptoms and in vulnerable or high-traffic environments, with the aim of curbing the spread of the virus. In this context, the Regional Ministry of Health has once again stressed the importance of influenza vaccination, especially ahead of the Christmas holidays.
Predominance of influenza A and differences between islands
As regards the viruses detected, the data indicate that influenza A accounts for 55% of cases, followed by influenza B. Incidence is not uniform across the territory:
- Eivissa records the highest rate, with 103.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
- Menorca reaches 75.3 cases,
- Mallorca is slightly below the average, with 70.8 cases,
- Formentera records the lowest incidence, with 25.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Contingency plan and hospital reinforcements due to influenza in the Balearic Islands
In view of the expected increase in hospital admissions and emergency visits due to respiratory infections, the Health Service has activated a contingency plan that provides for the availability of up to 215 additional hospital beds in the Balearic Islands, as well as strengthening coordination between hospitals, primary care services and SAMU 061.
As part of this plan, the Son Espases University Hospital has already opened 8 additional beds this week. In addition, from 29 December, a further 25 beds will be activated at Sant Joan de Déu hospitals — 15 in Palma and 10 in Inca — under the framework of the agreement with these non-profit centres.
Likewise, the Son Llàtzer University Hospital activated 24 beds in Unit H1D on 9 December, with the incorporation of 11 nurses and 7 nursing assistants, in order to ensure a swift response and maintain the quality of care in the face of increased healthcare pressure.
