Cases of stroke attended by SAMU 061 between January and September this year have increased by 23% compared to the same period last year. In total, 767 stroke codes were activated, compared to 624 recorded in 2024. The increase is part of an analysis carried out by SAMU 061 Illes Balears, which aims to improve care planning and early detection of the disease.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and one of the main causes of disability. The Stroke Code brings together the prehospital and hospital services that are activated when a person suffers an acute stroke. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensuring care for patients with an acute cerebrovascular accident throughout the Balearic Islands.
Patient profile
84% of cases involve people aged between 40 and 75, and 57% are men. The study highlights a steady increase in strokes among people over 60, linked to risk factors such as high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle and tobacco use.
Mallorca records the majority of cases
79% of cases occurred in Mallorca, 13% in Ibiza, 7% in Menorca and 1% in Formentera.
The highest incidence rates were recorded in municipalities with high population density such as Palma, Manacor, Inca, Calvià, Llucmajor and Marratxí. Areas with a high seasonal population also stand out, such as Alcúdia, Capdepera, Ibiza and Santanyí.
Reference hospitals
67% of patients were transferred to the Son Espases University Hospital, 12% to Son Llàtzer University Hospital and 8% to Can Misses Hospital.
The average response time from the emergency call to arrival at the hospital is 59 minutes, consolidating SAMU 061 as a key player in reducing brain ischaemia time, a decisive factor in stroke recovery. The service works in close coordination with reference hospitals and remains committed to continuous training, early telephone detection and on-site patient stabilisation.
Recognising the symptoms saves lives
SAMU 061 Illes Balears reminds the public that recognising symptoms early can save lives. The main warning signs of a stroke are:
- Sudden loss of strength or sensation in the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body).
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
- Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes.
- Severe and sudden headache with no apparent cause.
At the first sign of a stroke, call 061 immediately. Acting quickly can mean the difference between a full recovery and permanent disability, or even death.
