Next Sunday the 21st Fira del Caragol will be held in the Sant Jordi neighbourhood in Palma. The popular event was created at the proposal of different neighbourhood associations and entities

Palma Town Hall has presented a new edition of the Fira del Caragol de Sant Jordi, which will be held next Sunday the 21st of May in this Palma neighbourhood.

The event was born at the proposal of different neighbourhood associations and entities in the area in 2001. It has become a key event in the city’s festive calendar, attracting more than 15,000 people every year.

Gastronomic fair

This is an essentially gastronomic fair dedicated to snails, with around thirty stalls offering:

  • Sale and tasting of cooked snails as the main focus, with the participation of companies that breed, produce and market Mallorcan snails.
  • Other specialised producers such as cheese, oil, wine, organic products, sale of agri-food products, stalls of artisans, creators and artists.
  • Also bars and restaurants from Sant Jordi, s’Aranjassa and Casa Blanca.

The aim is to promote snail gastronomy and publicise its culinary possibilities, as well as to promote the snail farms in Mallorca as an economic outlet and a way of recovering agricultural land.

Programme of the Fira del Caragol

Here are the activities that will take place during the event:

  • The fair programme kicks off this coming Friday with a wine tasting.
  • Saturday: the day begins with a parade with ‘xeremiers’ of Sant Jordi and a gastronomic conference with the snail as the main element of traditional cuisine. At 4 p.m., the traditional snail races will take place. In the evening there will be a gastronomic night with a musical performance by Monkey’s Swinger. A popular snail race and a table decoration competition will be held in Plaça Bisbe Planes. The evening will also be enlivened by the musical group Expresión.
  • On Sunday a parade, the ‘Corredrac de Sant Jordi’, will put the finishing touch to the fair, which will open its doors to the public at 9:30 am until 7 pm.

Tasting of a giant two-metre-long ensaimada

Among the novelties are culinary demonstrations by two chefs from the Asociación de Cocineros Afincados en las Islas Baleares (ASCAIB), as well as a tasting of typical dishes prepared by the cookery teachers of the IES Puig de Sa Font de Son Servera secondary school.

There will also be activities for the whole family, with family and children’s workshops by Kcodril and folk dancing. The traditional giant ensaimada, measuring two metres in diameter, made by the Can Coll bakery, will also be available for tasting.

The City Council will set up a park-and-ride car park and will increase the frequency of the EMT bus service to facilitate the arrival of all those citizens who decide to travel by public transport.
