The Plenary of the Consell de Mallorca has initially approved the fourth modification of the Territorial Plan of Mallorca (PTI), a crucial step for the expropriation of the Castle of Alaró. This measure, included in the modification, aims to protect and preserve the iconic monument as a supramunicipal facility intended for the historical, archaeological and landscape interpretation of the site.

The Castle of Alaró, located in a unique natural setting, will be designated as a supramunicipal general system within rustic land, in order to ensure the conservation and restoration of the monument. Additionally, the aim is to guarantee public access and proper management for its enjoyment, in line with its status as a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC).
“For all Mallorcans”
The conseller of Territori, Fernando Rubio, explained the significance of this initiative, stating that “today we take the first step to ensure that the Castle of Alaró is for all Mallorcans, including in the PTI modification that we have just approved the possibility of acquiring an emblematic monument for Mallorca, which is in serious danger of deterioration.” Rubio emphasised that the Consell would carry out this process “always with the backing and reports from the institution’s technical experts” and would act in accordance with the laws of Territorial Planning and Historical Heritage. “We will do what the Territorial Planning Law and the Historical Heritage Law allow us to do, always with the proper technical reports, to turn the Castle of Alaró into a supramunicipal facility for historical, archaeological and landscape interpretation for all Mallorcans,” the conseller added.

History of the Castle of Alaró
The Castle of Alaró is a military fortification located on top of the Puig de Alaró, whose origins date back to the year 902, when the Moors arrived on the island. Throughout history, it was occupied by various conquering forces until it was abandoned in the 14th and 15th centuries, although it maintained a military garrison until the year 1741. From that date, the castle was used exclusively for religious purposes, as a chapel was built inside in 1622.
In addition to its historical value, the Castle of Alaró offers stunning views of the Sierra de Tramuntana and the Pla de Mallorca, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the landscape.
