From 8 February until 2 June 2024, CaixaForum Palma becomes the epicentre of a unique experience with the arrival of the exhibition “Tattoo. Art under the skin”. This exhibition, produced and organised by the prestigious Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris and the “la Caixa” Foundation, offers a fascinating journey through the history and social relevance of tattooing over time and in different cultures.
An anthropological journey through tattooing
“Tattoo. Art under the skin” invites us to explore the unique universe of tattooing from an anthropological perspective. It analyses its resurgence as a global phenomenon and its role as a form of artistic expression around the world. The exhibition follows in the footsteps of tattoo artists and tattooed people across eras and continents, revealing the confluences that have made tattooing a universal artistic language.
The exhibition brings together more than 240 historical and contemporary works including photographs, drawings, paintings, books, audiovisuals and objects such as tools, masks and stamps. Among the featured artists is Whang-od Oggay, a 106-year-old Filipina tattoo artist who is considered the last master to use batok, a traditional handmade tattooing technique.
As part of the exhibition, some twenty prototypes of hyper-realistic bodies modelled in silicone and tattooed with ink are presented. They have been created especially for this occasion by masters of the art of tattooing from different parts of the world. Among them are prominent names such as Horiyoshi III, Filip Leu, Mark Kopua, Kari Barba, Colin Dale, Jee Sayalero and Laura Juan. Also new is a new piece by Yann Black, whose work symbolises the liberation of oppressed peoples.
