The Institute for Coexistence and School Success, Convivèxit, has drawn up a document of good practices for the reception of refugee children from Ukraine in the educational centers of the Balearic Islands.
Amanda Fernández, general director of Early Childhood, Innovation and the Educational Community, explained that “the educational centers of the Balearic Islands are used to welcoming foreign students, it is not for nothing that we are the Spanish community with the highest percentage of foreign students in the State, but in this In this case, the terrible circumstances associated with the situation in Ukraine are added and we thought it was pertinent to help the centers with resources to attend to the special situation of these children and adolescents, and their families”.
The objective of this manual is to promote comprehensive care and support for refugee students and their families. Despite the fact that the educational centers of the Balearic Islands have a series of protocols that apply to students who join after the deadline to facilitate adaptation, it has been considered that refugee students face a more sensitive challenge since it is very likely that they will retain memories painful experiences linked to the sudden abandonment of their home and also reaches environments where there are no familiar faces and where their language is not spoken.
Students from the Ukraine area are currently arriving through various channels: families who come on their own, refugee families through institutional channels, and families who are being hosted by other families through NGOs. The priority is to find a stable settlement for the families and later a school place will be assigned in the places closest to home. The goal is to make enrollment as easy as possible.
In the case of families that come on their own and have residence in the Balearic Islands, the students are already enrolling and in the other cases it will be done as they have a stable family destination.
