The Balearic Government is looking for places to locate the Ukrainian refugees that the central Executive will send after the European Union decided to welcome them to alleviate the migratory pressure of the bordering countries.

This was explained by the Minister of Social Affairs, Fina Santiago, after the meeting she held today with the rest of the autonomous communities together with the Ministry of Migration, reported IB3.

According to Santiago, at the moment, the two refugee shelters in Palma are almost full and for this reason, he says, alternatives must be sought, such as convents, which are empty, or shelters.

Last Friday, Ukrainian residents in Palma demonstrated in Plaza España shouting “Murderer Putin” a day after the start of the invasion when their compatriots were already approaching the neighboring countries. The European Union has been in favor of activating the “temporary protection” directive.

This directive is the legal framework designed by Brussels to give immediate protection to people who arrive en masse on community territory and cannot return to their countries, and it would be applied for the first time since its approval in 2001.

In an institutional declaration, the Spanish government has ratified its “indestructible” commitment to the Ukrainian people and to ensuring their well-being, both for the citizens who already live in Spain and for those who may arrive in the coming days fleeing the war.
