The Department of Tourism of the Consell de Mallorca has ordered the immediate cessation of activity of ten apartments used for illegal tourist rentals, all located in a single building in Palma. In addition, individual fines of €80,000 have been issued to each property, amounting to a total of €800,000 in penalties.
The action follows a thorough administrative procedure carried out by the sanctions division of the Department of Tourism, which identified the lack of a licence in all the affected properties. The Tourism Councillor, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, expressed his satisfaction with the measure and praised the work of the inspection and sanctions service. “The illegal offer is unfair competition that seriously harms those who operate legally on our island and represents a problem for community relations. We are committed to fighting and eradicating it,” Rodríguez stated.
The councillor emphasised that these actions result from a rigorous process carried out within the legally established deadlines. Moving forward, the Inspection Department will monitor to ensure that the cessation of activity is enforced. In case of non-compliance, the Department of Tourism is prepared to refer the matter to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Higher fines to deter illegal activity
The fines for illegal tourist rentals in Mallorca currently stand at €80,000 per property, compared to the previous minimum fine of €40,001. The legislation allows for a range of penalties that can reach up to €400,000. This increase aims to deter offenders and protect both residents and the legal security of the regulated tourist market.
