The Consell de Mallorca has decided to exercise its pre-emptive right to acquire the Almallutx estate, located in the municipality of Escorca, for an initial price of €1.3 million. Situated at the foot of Puig Major and next to the Gorg Blau reservoir, this estate holds significant historical and archaeological value. The island authority aims to ensure its preservation and prevent the property from falling into private hands, following reports that a U.S. investment fund was considered as a potential buyer.

The Vice President of the Consell and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, emphasised the importance of Almallutx as a key site in Mallorca’s history, being the last Islamic refuge during the island’s conquest by King Jaume I. “It is essential to ensure that Almallutx remains under public ownership to preserve its legacy for future generations and prevent it from passing into private hands,” she stated.

Almallutx, a crucial site for documenting the Islamic period

The estate, covering over 120,000 square metres in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, contains archaeological remains from various periods, including the Talayotic, Byzantine, and Islamic eras. Researchers consider this site crucial for deepening the understanding of the organisation of rural Islamic communities in Mallorca, a period that remains under-documented.

The partial auction of the property was triggered by disputes among co-owners over asset division, leading one of them to initiate legal proceedings for the division of common property. The Consell’s intervention aims to prevent this valuable heritage site from becoming inaccessible to the public and reinforces its commitment to protecting the island’s historical and cultural legacy.
