Once again this year, Bellver Castle is hosting the traditional celebration of Diumenge de l’Àngel 2024, one of Palma’s most emblematic popular festivities. From 10:30 am until 5 pm on Sunday the 7th of April, those attending will be able to enjoy a full programme of activities that will delight young and old alike. Of course, the Pujada al Castell (11 am) and the Passejada de l’Àngel (1.30 pm), the high points of this festive day that dates back to the year 1407, are not to be missed.
The starting signal for Diumenge de l’Àngel 2024 will be at 10.30 am, with a quick chess tournament, and will culminate at 4 pm with the Castellers de Mallorca and the Colla Castellera Allots de Llevant. A K-pop performance, concerts by the Es Fortí and Son Dameto choirs, popular dances, exhibitions, historical monologues and popular dances, among other activities, will bring to life a colourful celebration deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Palma.
The proposals for the little ones at home include the Trencaclosques show, various games and entertainment on the esplanade of the Castell car park, the Children’s Traffic Park of the Palma Local Police and visits to the stables of the Mounted Police.
Free shuttle bus
To make it easier for those attending to enjoy this celebration, EMT Palma will provide a free shuttle bus service to get to and from the Castell de Bellver.
It will run every 10 minutes, with the first departure from Calle Camilo José Cela at 10.00 am and the last departure from Castell de Bellver at 5.33 pm.
40th anniversary of the recovery of Diumenge de l’Àngel
The historical importance of this festivity dates back to 1407, when it began to be celebrated together with the old Festa de la Caritat. However, its true rebirth took place exactly 40 years ago, in 1984, thanks to the efforts of Palma City Council and the Federació d’Associacions de Veïns (Federation of Neighbourhood Associations) of the capital.
The councillor for Citizen Participation, Lourdes Roca, explains that “Diumenge de l’Àngel has become one of the most popular events on the island since its beginnings, with a massive turnout of citizens. Especially farmers, who saw the figure of the Angel as a protector of agricultural activities”.
