The occupational accident rate in Balears has seen a significant decline in 2024, particularly in the construction sector, where workplace accidents have dropped by 9.37% compared to the previous year. Thanks to this improvement, the region is no longer leading the occupational accident rate in Spain and has dropped three places in the ranking, now sitting behind Andalusia, La Rioja, and Navarre.
Moreover, the rate of fatal workplace accidents has decreased by 29.41% compared to 2023, when this figure had risen by 142.86%.
In this regard, the regional secretary for labour, employment, and social dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, stated that “the data reflects a sustained reduction in occupational accidents and confirms that the intensive work of the Institut de Seguretat i Salut Laboral (IBASSAL) is yielding results”.
Indeed, one of the key factors contributing to this improvement has been the inspections and visits carried out by IBASSAL, which have reached 2,060 actions in 2,682 companies, aimed at ensuring compliance with occupational risk prevention systems.

Measures and prevention campaigns for occupational accidents in Balears
To continue this downward trend, the Balearic Government has launched a new campaign under the slogan “La seguretat és cosa de tots” (Safety is everyone’s responsibility), aimed at workers, businesses, and the self-employed.
IBASSAL has also intensified its prevention measures, including:
- Visits to companies with fragile roofing.
- Inspections to prevent workers’ exposure to noise and occupational diseases.
- Assessments of the risk of exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust.
- Investigations into workplace accidents caused by chemical substances.
Additionally, inspections will continue to reinforce workplace safety across the region. The director of IBASSAL, Óscar Paz, highlighted that “the companies visited show a high level of cooperation and, in cases where corrective actions are required, they generally comply quickly”.
